6) Will a PVC DWV male adapter thread into a cast iron or steel drain fitting?
The male end is standard male NPT, so it mates with any female NPT drainage connection of the same size, including metal. Go easy on the torque and use a sealant, since the plastic thread is the softer of the two. What it will not do is join directly to cast iron hub or no-hub pipe, that takes a transition coupling instead of a threaded adapter.
7) Should I use a male adapter or a female adapter on my PVC drain?
It comes down to which half of the joint carries the female thread. The 4804 gives you a male thread, so use it when the mating part has a female threaded port, a threaded cleanout body, a floor drain tapping, or a fixture inlet. If the mating part has a male thread on it, you want the female adapter version instead. Both solvent weld to pipe on the hub side, the thread direction is the whole difference.
