The PVC DWV 22-1/2-degree elbow features a hub x hub connection and is used to change the direction of flow. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is the most frequently specified of all thermoplastic materials because of its light weight, durability, and cost-effectiveness. PVC DWV is easy to install and is joined by solvent cementing or threading. PVC fittings exhibit high corrosion and chemical resistance and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. NIBCO® plastic fittings are backed by a 5-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco K079350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco 4808 22-1/2 degree elbow glue onto Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe, or does it need threading?
Both ends of the 4808 are hub (socket) ends sized for Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe, so it solvent cements on. No threads, no gaskets, no adapters. PVC DWV joins either by solvent cementing or threading, and with hub x hub ends this fitting is a cement-only joint. Dry-fit the pipe into both hubs first, then prime and cement.
2) Can I use a 22-1/2 degree PVC elbow on a pressure or compressed air line?
No. The 4808 is a DWV fitting, built for drain, waste and vent only, and it must never be tested or used with compressed air or other gases. It is also not a pressure-rated fitting. For water supply or pressure service you need a pressure-rated PVC or CPVC fitting, not a DWV one.
3) How hot can the water going through a PVC DWV elbow be? Will a dishwasher or commercial kitchen discharge damage it?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. Ordinary residential dishwasher and laundry discharge sits under that. Sustained higher-temperature discharge, the kind you get off commercial dishmachines, sterilizers or boiler blowdown, exceeds what this PVC fitting is rated for, and those lines call for a higher-temperature material instead.
4) Does the Nibco 4808 elbow meet plumbing code for a commercial drainage system?
It is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. Certified, which is the certification set inspectors look for on DWV fittings. Listed for both commercial and residential plumbing use. D3311 is the DWV pattern standard, so the fitting geometry matches what the drainage code expects of a 1/16 bend.
5) Will a white PVC 22-1/2 elbow match the black ABS drain pipe already in my building?
No, and the color is the tell. The 4808 is white PVC. Black pipe in a wall is ABS, a different plastic that PVC cement will not properly bond to. Matching an existing PVC system is straightforward, but tying into ABS needs a transition coupling or the correct transition cement, not a plain PVC hub fitting. Check what is already in the wall before you buy.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4808 22-1/2 degree DWV elbow come in?
Five sizes: 1-1/2, 2, 3, 4 and 6 inch. Both hubs are the same size on every one (straight size, no reducing versions), so a 3 inch 4808 takes 3 inch pipe on both ends. Typical use: 1-1/2 and 2 inch on branch and vent runs, 3 and 4 inch on closet and building drains, 6 inch on building sewer or large stack work.
7) Should I use a 22-1/2 degree elbow or a 45 for offsetting a drain line around an obstruction?
A 22-1/2 degree elbow (a 1/16 bend) changes direction half as sharply as a 45, so it makes a shallower offset over a longer horizontal run. That is the reason to reach for it: less flow disruption, less solids drop-out, and it gets you around a joist, beam or duct where a 45 would swing the line too far. If you need to clear the obstruction in a short distance, use the 45. Two 22-1/2s back to back also give you a gentle 45 with a straight section between.
8) Is a 22-1/2 degree elbow acceptable on a vent line as well as a drain?
Yes. The 4808 is rated across drain, waste and vent, so the same fitting works for offsetting a vent around framing as it does on a horizontal waste run. It is the same white Schedule 40 PVC either way.
9) Will a PVC DWV elbow corrode or scale in a waste line the way cast iron does?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up in waste lines carrying detergents and household chemicals where metal pipe degrades. High corrosion and chemical resistance is the main reason DWV work moved to it. No coating or wrap is needed on the fitting.
