1) What is the difference between a street elbow and a regular elbow on PVC DWV fittings?
A street fitting has one spigot end and one hub end, so it plugs directly into the hub of another fitting without a short piece of pipe between them. The Nibco 4808-2 is spigot x hub, which is what lets you stack it straight onto a wye, a coupling, or another elbow in a tight joist bay. A standard 22-1/2 degree elbow is hub x hub and needs a pipe nipple to make that same connection. Nibco lists it under both straight size and fitting/street configurations.
2) Will the Nibco 4808-2 fit Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe?
Yes, it is a Schedule 40 fitting and solvent welds to Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe of the matching nominal size. Buy the fitting to the pipe size you are running, not to the fitting size you are entering, since the spigot end is sized to drop into a hub of that same nominal size.
3) Does the Nibco 4808-2 meet code for a permitted DWV installation?
It is manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and NSF U.P. certified, which is the set of markings a plumbing inspector looks for on a PVC DWV fitting. D2665 covers the PVC DWV pipe and fitting material, D3311 covers the drainage fitting pattern and its dimensions, which is why it interchanges with other D3311 fittings of the same size and angle.
4) When should I use a 22-1/2 degree elbow instead of a 45 on a DWV line?
A 22-1/2 degree bend is a 1/16 bend, the shallowest offset in the standard DWV set. Use it when you need to dodge a joist, a stud, or a beam and a 45 would throw the line further off than you have room to come back from, and when you want to keep the change of direction gentle so solids keep moving. Two of them make a 45 total. If you need to gain real lateral travel in a short run, go to the 45 (1/8 bend); if you are turning a corner, the 90 is the fitting.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 4808-2 street elbow come in?
Four sizes: 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch. That covers the usual DWV range from lavatory and tub waste arms through to a 3 or 4 inch main drain or stack. Part numbers run K079550 for 1-1/2 inch, K079600 for 2 inch, K079620 for 3 inch and K079630 for 4 inch.
6) What is the maximum temperature a Nibco PVC DWV elbow can handle?
140 degrees F is the ceiling. That is fine for normal kitchen, lavatory, laundry and tub drainage, but it rules the fitting out downstream of a commercial dishwasher, a sterilizer, a boiler blowdown, or anything else discharging near boiling water. Those runs want CPVC or cast iron instead.
7) Can I thread a PVC DWV street elbow, or does it have to be solvent welded?
Both joining methods work on PVC DWV, but the 4808-2 has no threads on it. Its ends are a plain spigot and a plain hub, so it is a solvent cement joint at both connections. If you need a threaded transition at that point in the run, use a separate male or female adapter next to the elbow rather than trying to tap this one.
8) Will a white PVC DWV elbow match the drain fittings already in my building?
The 4808-2 is white PVC, the standard color for DWV in most of the US, so it matches typical existing white PVC drainage. If the building is piped in cream or off-white ABS, this is not a color match and, more to the point, PVC and ABS are different materials that need a transition cement or a mechanical coupling at the joint rather than a straight solvent weld.
9) Will PVC drain fittings corrode or rust in a buried or damp application?
PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up to the chemicals normally found in waste lines, which is why it is used in place of cast iron on renovation work. The limits that do apply to the 4808-2 are the 140 degree F service temperature and the fact that it is DWV, not pressure rated.
