1) What does the spigot end on the Nibco 4810-2 street wye do that a regular wye doesn't?
A street wye has one end formed as a spigot instead of a hub, so it slips directly into the hub of another fitting. That saves you a short cut piece of pipe and a coupling when you need to branch right off the outlet of a trap adapter, elbow or another fitting. The 4810-2 is Spigot x Hub x Hub, so the spigot goes into the upstream fitting and the two hubs take pipe.
2) Will the Nibco 4810-2 PVC wye fit standard Schedule 40 DWV pipe?
Yes. It's a Schedule 40 PVC DWV fitting with solvent weld ends, so it mates with standard Schedule 40 PVC DWV pipe of the matching size using PVC primer and cement. No threading or gasket required.
3) What sizes does the Nibco 4810-2 street wye come in, including reducing configurations?
Seven configurations. Straight sizes are 2 inch, 3 inch and 4 inch. Reducing versions are 3 x 3 x 2, 3 x 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 4 x 3 and 4 x 4 x 2. The reducers let you branch a smaller fixture line (a 1-1/2 inch lav or a 2 inch kitchen or laundry line) off a 3 or 4 inch main without a separate bushing.
4) Can I use a 45-degree wye for a horizontal drain branch, or do I need a sanitary tee?
The 45-degree (1/8 bend) wye is the fitting for horizontal-to-horizontal and horizontal-to-vertical drainage connections, because the sweep keeps flow moving in the direction of travel instead of turning it square. Sanitary tees are generally restricted to vertical-to-horizontal use. The 4810-2 is a DWV drain, waste and vent fitting and it's used in both commercial and residential plumbing.
5) Does the Nibco 4810-2 meet code for a permitted DWV installation?
It's manufactured to ASTM D2665 and D3311, certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14, and carries the NSF U.P. (drain, waste and vent) certification. Those are the markings an inspector looks for on PVC DWV fittings.
6) Will this wye match the white PVC DWV already in my building?
Color is white, the standard for PVC DWV, so it blends with existing white Schedule 40 PVC drain lines. If your building is piped in black ABS, this is not the fitting to use, ABS and PVC take different cements and are not interchangeable by solvent weld.
7) How do I join a Nibco PVC DWV street wye, and do I need any extra parts?
Solvent cementing. Clean and prime the pipe and the socket, apply PVC cement, and make the joint with a quarter turn. No gaskets, clamps or fasteners are supplied or needed, just primer, PVC cement and cut, deburred pipe. 8) Can I run hot dishwasher or laundry discharge through a PVC DWV wye?
Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. Normal residential dishwasher and laundry discharge falls under that, but continuous high-temperature commercial waste above 140 F needs a different material. PVC won't rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it holds up in waste service.
