Nibco 9169350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco 616 copper plug go inside a fitting or inside a piece of pipe?
The 616 is an Ftg (fitting) end plug, which means it has a male solder end sized to slip into a solder cup. It goes into the cup of another fitting, not into the end of a tube. If you need to cap the end of a run of copper tube, you want a cup-end cap instead, because that slides over the tube OD.
2) Is the Nibco 616 plug lead-free and approved for potable water?
It is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is the drinking water requirement, so it is usable on residential and commercial potable plumbing. It is also dezincification resistant.
3) Can I use this copper plug on a medical gas or refrigeration line?
Yes on both. The 616 is listed for med-gas service and conforms to NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems plus CGA Pamphlet G4.1, and it is also rated for ACR air conditioning and refrigeration work. Med-gas installs still require the tube and joints be brazed and handled per the facility's med-gas procedures.
4) What sizes does the Nibco 616 fitting plug come in?
Three sizes: 3/8 inch (part 9169300), 1/2 inch (9169350) and 3/4 inch (9169400). The size refers to the nominal copper tube size of the cup it plugs into.
5) What material and standards does the Nibco 616 plug meet for a spec job?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions follow MSS SP-104. It is produced in an ISO 9001 certified facility. That combination is what most commercial and institutional copper specs call out.
6) Is the 616 a solder fitting or can it be brazed?
It is a solder pressure fitting with a solder end connection, joined by heating the joint and drawing filler into the capillary gap. Brazing filler is used on the same joint design where the system requires it, such as ACR and med-gas lines, which this plug is rated for. Follow the Nibco copper fittings installation instructions for joint prep and heat.
7) What other systems besides water can I use this plug on?
Listed uses cover compressed air, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial process, irrigation, and residential and commercial plumbing, in addition to medical gas. It is a general purpose way to dead-end a copper line or close off an unused port in a fitting.
