1) How do the ends on the Nibco 618-3 flush bushing connect - solder or thread?
One of each. The 618-3 is an Ftg x F bushing: the male end is fitting-size, so it solders into the socket of another copper fitting, and the other end is female NPT thread. That combination lets you drop down a size and switch from a sweat line to threaded pipe in one piece.
2) Can I use this Nibco copper bushing on potable water in a commercial building?
Yes. The 618-3 is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is what potable water systems require. Listed system uses include commercial and residential plumbing, along with hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, irrigation, compressed air, industrial and med-gas.
3) Do I need a coupling to install a fitting-end (Ftg) bushing, or does it go straight into the pipe?
Straight into a fitting. The Ftg end is machined to copper tube outside diameter, so it slips into the solder cup of a tee, elbow or valve, not over the pipe. If you're coming off a length of tube instead, you need a C x F adapter or a coupling ahead of the bushing. The flush design means the bushing seats inside the socket rather than standing proud of it.
4) What size reductions does the Nibco 618-3 copper flush bushing come in?
Two reductions: 1 inch by 1/2 inch (MPN 9178000) and 1/2 inch by 1/8 inch (MPN 9179230). The first number is the fitting solder end, the second the female NPT tap.
5) What copper alloy is the Nibco 618-3 made from and will it hold up in aggressive water?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, and Nibco lists it as dezincification resistant. Because it's copper rather than a brass alloy, there's no zinc to leach out in water chemistries that attack yellow brass fittings.
6) Does this Nibco bushing meet the spec for copper solder fittings on a commercial submittal?
It's built to ASME B16.22 for material and workmanship, and to MSS SP-104 for material, workmanship and dimensions. It's also made in an ISO 9001 certified facility. Those are the three lines a spec reviewer normally wants on a wrot copper pressure fitting.
7) What's the difference between a flush bushing and a reducing coupling?
A flush bushing seats down inside an existing fitting socket, so it reduces the size without adding length to the run - useful when a valve or tee is already in place and you need a smaller threaded takeoff. A reducing coupling joins two tube ends and adds a fitting length to the line. Nibco classes the 618-3 as both flush and reducing, and it also changes joint type (solder to NPT), which a coupling won't do.
8) Can I run a small gauge or instrument tap off a 1/2 inch copper line with this?
That's what the 1/2 inch by 1/8 inch 618-3 is for. The 1/8 inch female NPT tap takes a gauge, sensor well, air vent or petcock, and the Ftg end drops into an existing 1/2 inch fitting socket. Common on hydronic heating and compressed air work, both of which are listed system uses.
