Nibco 9177670 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does Ftg x C mean on the Nibco 618 flush bushing?
Ftg x C means one end is fitting (male) size and the other is a solder cup (female). The Ftg end slips into the cup of an existing copper fitting or valve, and the C cup accepts the smaller copper tube. Both ends are soldered, so the joint is made with solder and flux, not threads.
2) How do I reduce from 1 inch copper down to 1/2 inch inside an existing fitting?
Use the 618 flush bushing in the 1 inch x 1/2 inch size, MPN 9177670. The bushing drops into the 1 inch cup of the fitting or valve you already have and gives you a 1/2 inch solder cup on the other side, so you don't have to cut out and replace the larger fitting. A 1 x 3/4 inch version (9177750) is there if you only need one step down.
3) Is the Nibco 618 copper bushing lead free and approved for potable water?
It's lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which covers drinking water contact and lead content. It's also dezincification resistant, so it holds up in aggressive water. Material is copper alloy C12200 per ASTM B75.
4) Can I use this copper bushing on a medical gas line?
Yes. The 618 is listed for med-gas service and meets NFPA 99 for health care facility gas and vacuum systems along with Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1. Same fitting is used on compressed air, fire protection, hydronic heating, HVAC, irrigation, and both commercial and residential potable water.
5) What standards do these Nibco wrot copper bushings meet for a spec submittal?
Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions are per MSS SP-104. Alloy is C12200 to ASTM B75, and the fittings are made in an ISO 9001 certified facility. NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 cover potable water and lead content.
6) Should I use a flush bushing or a reducing coupling for a copper size change?
A flush bushing is the right call when the larger fitting or valve is already in place and you only need to step the outlet down, because the Ftg end seats inside that existing cup and adds almost no length to the run. A reducing coupling is for joining two lengths of tube of different sizes where you're building the joint from scratch. The 618 is classed as both flush and reducing.
7) Do I solder this bushing or can it be pressed?
Solder only. Both ends are solder joints, so the install is clean, flux, heat and solder, the same as any wrot copper fitting. There is no press or threaded option on the 618.
