The Nibco 698 is a copper P-trap that goes in the suction line of a refrigeration compressor. The line is looped down to the floor through the trap before it runs vertically up, so oil cannot drain back into the compressor when the system shuts down. On tall risers you add another trap for every 20 feet of vertical pipe, which keeps oil or liquid from building high velocity as it returns to the compressor on shutdown. It is made for 1 inch copper tube, with a 1 inch solder cup on each end. Because both ends are the same size, it drops into a 1 inch suction line without a reducer. If your suction line is a different diameter you need a different size trap, not this one.
4) Is the Nibco 698 P-trap lead free and approved for potable water systems?
The fitting is lead-free and dezincification resistant, and it carries NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 certification, which is the potable water and lead content standard. Its listed system uses cover residential and commercial plumbing along with HVAC, compressed air, fire protection, heating, irrigation, industrial and medical gas.
5) Can this copper P-trap be used on a medical gas line?

The extra traps break up the column so oil or liquid returning to the compressor at shutdown does not build high velocity. Count your vertical run and order accordingly rather than assuming a single fitting covers the job.
8) Is a copper suction line P-trap better than fabricating a trap from elbows on site?
A fabricated trap from street elbows works but gives you four to five joints to make and a loop geometry that varies with whoever bent it. The 698 is a single wrot copper fitting with two 1 inch solder cups, so it is two joints and a consistent loop. On a med-gas or spec job that also matters, since the fitting is manufactured to ASME B16.22 and MSS SP-104 dimensions, which a shop-built assembly is not.
