The male adapter features a male solder end and male NPT thread. These fittings provide a means for adapting a solder connection to a threaded connection. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Because of its longstanding reputation for innovation and precision in design and manufacturing, NIBCO is the preferred brand in the industry.

Nibco B034850 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What kind of connection does the Nibco 704-2 drop adapter make?
It converts a copper solder joint to a male pipe thread. The Ftg x M configuration means one end is a fitting (street) solder end that slips into the cup of another copper fitting, and the other end is a male NPT thread for screwing into a female threaded port, valve, or nipple. So it is the part you use where a soldered copper run has to land on threaded equipment.
2) Can I use the Nibco 704-2 bronze adapter on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states that use of this fitting in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a cast bronze body to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, which is not a lead-free potable alloy. Keep it to non-potable service such as hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial or irrigation piping, and specify a lead-free adapter for anything feeding drinking water.
3) What do the two numbers in the Nibco 704-2 sizes like 3/4 x 1/2 mean?
The first number is the copper tube size of the solder end, the second is the NPT thread size. So the 3/4 x 1/2 (B034150) has a 3/4 inch fitting-end solder connection reducing to a 1/2 inch male thread, and the 3/4 x 1 (B034100) steps up to a 1 inch thread. Where only one size is shown, such as 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch, the solder end and the thread are the same nominal size.
4) Will the Nibco 704-2 solder end fit into another copper fitting's cup, or does it need a coupling?
No coupling needed. Because the solder end is a fitting-end (Ftg, also called street), it is sized to the outside diameter of copper tube and drops straight into the socket of an elbow, tee, or valve cup. That saves a joint compared with a standard male adapter, which has a female solder cup and needs a length of tube or a separate fitting to connect.
5) What sizes does the Nibco 704-2 drop adapter come in?
Eight sizes: 3/4 x 1/2, 3/4 x 1, 1 x 3/4, and straight 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Part numbers run B034150, B034100, B034400, B034550, B034700, B034850, B035000 and B035100 respectively.
6) Is the Nibco 704-2 adapter suitable for a hydronic or chilled water system in a commercial building?
Yes. Nibco lists this cast bronze adapter for commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation service, which covers hydronic and chilled water piping where the copper run has to land on a threaded pump flange, air separator, valve, or gauge port. The one exclusion is potable drinking water.
7) Does the Nibco 704-2 meet ASME B16.18 for a spec job?
Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.18, the standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings, and the fittings are made in an ISO 9001 certified facility. That is the callout submittals usually ask for on cast solder pressure fittings.
8) Is the Nibco 704-2 dezincification resistant, and why does that matter on an irrigation or hydronic loop?
It is dezincification resistant, cast from ASTM B584 Alloy C84400. That matters on systems with aggressive or high-chloride water, where ordinary brass can lose zinc over time and the threads or body turn porous and leak. On buried irrigation and long-running closed loops that resistance is the reason to spec a cast bronze adapter rather than a generic brass one.
9) Do I need thread sealant on the male NPT end of the Nibco 704-2?
Yes, the male end is a tapered NPT thread and needs PTFE tape or a pipe thread sealant rated for the system fluid and temperature. Solder the fitting end first and let it cool before making the threaded joint, so torch heat is not driving through a sealed thread. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering joint prep and heating.
