Nibco B032800 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the Nibco 704 male adapter connect to on each end?
One end is a solder cup that takes copper tube, the other is a male NPT thread. So it converts a soldered copper line into a threaded connection, for tying into valves, equipment, pumps, or threaded steel piping. The thread is male, so it screws into a female (FIP) port.
2) Can the Nibco 704 bronze male adapter be used on potable drinking water in the US?
No. The 704 cast bronze male adapter is ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and its use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It remains usable on non-potable service such as heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial, and irrigation systems. For potable water you need a lead-free adapter instead.
3) Does the Nibco 704 come in a size where the solder end and thread size don't match?
Yes, most of the range is a reducing or increasing adapter. Examples include 3/4 in copper to 3/8 in NPT, 3/4 in to 1-1/4 in, 3/4 in to 1-1/2 in, 1 in to 1-1/2 in, 1 in to 2 in, 1-1/4 in to 2 in, 2 in to 1-1/4 in, 2 in to 1-1/2 in, 2 in to 2-1/2 in, and 2-1/2 in to 2 in. The 3 in, 4 in, and 5 in are straight same-size adapters.
4) What is the Nibco 704 adapter made of, and is it a cast or wrought fitting?
It is a cast bronze fitting, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant. Material and workmanship conform to ASME B16.18. Cast bronze is what you get on the threaded adapters rather than the thinner wrought copper used on plain solder fittings, which is why the threads hold up to wrenching.
5) Will the Nibco 704 male adapter work on a fire protection or hydronic heating line?
Yes. Listed system uses include fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and commercial and residential plumbing (non-potable, given the drinking water restriction). Larger sizes up to 3, 4, and 5 inch cover main and riser transitions.
6) Do I need to do anything different when soldering a cast bronze male adapter versus a copper coupling?
The body is cast bronze, which is heavier than a wrought copper fitting and takes more heat and longer to bring the joint up to temperature, so work the flame on the fitting body rather than the tube. Thread the male NPT end before soldering where you can, or protect any attached valve from the heat. Nibco publishes Copper Fittings Installation Instructions with its engineering and installation data for this fitting.
7) Is the threaded end on the Nibco 704 NPT or BSP?
NPT. The thread is a male NPT taper thread, so it mates with female NPT ports and needs thread sealant or PTFE tape. It will not properly seal against a BSP parallel thread.
8) What is the biggest size Nibco 704 C x M adapter available?
The range tops out at 5 inch, with 3 inch and 4 inch below it as straight same-size adapters. The smallest listed combination is 3/4 inch copper to 3/8 inch NPT.
