1) What does a Nibco 708 flanged sink elbow connect to on each end?
The 708 is a C x F elbow: one end is a solder cup that slips over copper tube, and the other is a female NPT threaded flange. It turns the line 90 degrees, so it is what you use where a copper stub-out has to change direction and land on a male threaded connection.
2) Can I use the Nibco 708 sink elbow on a drinking water line?
No. The 708 is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications has been prohibited since January 3, 2014. Keep it to non-potable service. For a potable branch you need a lead-free rated fitting instead.
3) What size copper does the Nibco 708 elbow fit?
The 708 is made in 1/2 inch, MPN B081050. It is a straight-size fitting, so both the solder cup and the female NPT thread are 1/2 inch, with no reduction across the bend.
4) Will the Nibco 708 hold up on a heating or HVAC line, not just plumbing?
Yes. The 708 is rated by Nibco for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing service, with material and workmanship per ASME B16.18. The one restriction is potable water, where it cannot be used in the U.S.
5) How do I make up the joints on a Nibco 708 sink elbow?
Two different joints on the one fitting. The cup end is soldered to the copper tube, and the flanged end takes a male NPT thread with tape or pipe dope. Solder the copper side first and let it cool before you make the thread up, so you are not heating a fitting with a nipple already in it.
6) Is bronze fine here, or do I need a wrot copper fitting?
Bronze is the right call for this part. Cast bronze carries the threads, which is why the female NPT side is a casting rather than formed copper tube, and the C84400 alloy is dezincification resistant so it holds up in aggressive water. Wrot copper fittings are solder-only and cannot be tapped for a threaded outlet like this.
