Nibco NHA300M – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Nibco F-617-O cast iron gate valve bolt up to my Class 125 flanged pipe?
Yes. The F-617-O uses Class 125 flanged flat face end connections, so it mates with standard Class 125 flat face flanges on cast iron or steel pipe. Flat face means you pair it with a full face gasket, not a ring gasket. Sizes run 2 inch through 12 inch: 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch.
2) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco F-617-O gate valve handle?
Three ratings apply depending on the service. Cold working pressure is 200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock. On water at temperature it is 175 psi (12.1 bar) WWP. On saturated steam it is 125 psi (8.6 bar) up to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). If your system runs above 200 psi cold or above 125 psi steam, this is not the valve.
3) Can I use the Nibco F-617-O on potable water?
No. Use of this iron body gate valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Specify it for HVAC, heating, steam, gas and general utility service instead. For domestic water, you need a valve certified to the lead-free requirement.
4) Does the Nibco F-617-O meet the gate valve spec on my mechanical drawings?
The valve conforms to MSS SP-70, the standard for cast iron gate valves with flanged and threaded ends, and it is a Class 125 iron body bronze mounted OS&Y valve with a bolted bonnet and solid wedge. That combination is what most commercial mechanical specs call out for shutoff on hot and cold water, HVAC and steam service.
5) What does outside screw and yoke mean on a gate valve, and why would I want it?
OS&Y means the stem rises out through the yoke as the valve opens, so the position of the stem tells you at a glance whether the gate is open or shut. It also keeps the stem threads out of the media, which matters on steam and dirty utility water. The F-617-O is an OS&Y design, so allow vertical clearance above the valve equal to the stem travel when you set it in a tight mechanical room or a ceiling space.
6) Is the Nibco F-617-O a rebuildable valve or is it throw-away when it leaks?
It is a bolted bonnet valve, so the bonnet can be unbolted to get at the wedge, stem and seats rather than replacing the whole body. Construction is iron body bronze mounted, meaning the cast iron body carries bronze seating surfaces. That is the standard repairable configuration for a commercial gate valve and it is why facilities keep them in service for decades.
7) Should I use a gate valve or a butterfly valve for isolating a chilled water riser?
A gate valve like the F-617-O is an on/off isolation valve with a solid wedge, full port flow and effectively no pressure drop when open, but it is slow to operate and it is not made to throttle. Partially open, the wedge chatters and wears. If you need isolation on a large line and you want the valve to sit flat between flanges with less weight and a quarter turn, a butterfly is the usual pick. If you want tight, long-term shutoff with minimal restriction, and you have the vertical room for the rising stem, the gate valve is the right call.
8) What size Nibco F-617-O do I order for a 4 inch line, and what is the part number?
For a 4 inch flanged line the F-617-O carries part number NHA300H. The rest of the range: 2 inch is NHA300D, 2-1/2 inch NHA300E, 3 inch NHA300F, 5 inch NHA300J, 6 inch NHA300K, 8 inch NHA300L, 10 inch NHA300M and 12 inch NHA300N. Order by nominal pipe size to match your flange.
9) Do I need anything besides the valve to install a flanged cast iron gate valve?
The valve ships as the valve. For each end you supply a mating Class 125 flange, a full face gasket suited to your media and temperature, and a bolt set sized to the flange bolt pattern for that pipe size. On the larger sizes, 8 inch and up, plan the support and rigging before you break the line; cast iron bodies in those sizes are not a one-person lift.
10) Will the Nibco F-617-O work on a natural gas or compressed utility line?
Gas and other general utility services are among the listed applications for this flanged cast iron gate valve, alongside hot and cold water, HVAC and steam. Hold to the 200 psi non-shock cold working pressure limit, and confirm the valve is accepted by the authority having jurisdiction for the specific gas service in your building.
