Nibco NHAL10M – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will a Nibco F-637-31 gate valve bolt up to my Class 150 flanges?
Yes. The F-637-31 has Class 150 raised face flanged ends, so it mates with standard Class 150 flanged pipe, pumps and companion flanges of the same size. You supply the bolts, nuts and gaskets. If your system is flat face flanged cast iron equipment, the raised face is the detail to check before you set it.
2) Can I use the Nibco F-637-31 on potable water?
No. Use of this valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for hot and cold water, HVAC, steam, gas and general utility service on the commercial and industrial side. For potable lines you need a valve that meets current lead free requirements.
3) What pressure and temperature can this Nibco ductile iron gate valve handle?
Two numbers matter. The description rates it at 150 psi (10.3 bar) saturated steam to 366F/185C and 250 psi (17.2 bar) non shock cold working pressure. The spec attributes carry a higher ductile iron rating of 285 PSI / 19.7 Bar CWP and 185 PSI / 12.8 Bar SWP. Size your application to the rating printed on the valve body and the Nibco data sheet for the size you order.
4) What does outside screw and yoke mean on this gate valve, and why choose it over a rising stem inside screw type?
On an OS&Y valve the stem threads sit outside the body, so the stem rises visibly when the valve opens and the threads never see the media. You get a visual open/closed indication from across a mechanical room, and the packing can be serviced with the line in place. That is why OS&Y is the standard call on fire protection risers, steam and HVAC mains. Inside screw types are shorter in headroom but give you no visible indication and expose the threads to the fluid.
5) Is this Nibco valve suitable for a fire protection riser?
Fire protection is listed among its applications, and the OS&Y stem with a bolted bonnet is the arrangement typically specified for sprinkler risers because the open position is visible. Bear in mind that a fire service installation is usually governed by an approval listing for the specific valve and size, so confirm the approval that your AHJ requires for the size you are ordering.
6) What is the seat made of on the Nibco F-637-31, and is it a resilient seated valve?
It is iron body bronze mounted, meaning a ductile iron body with bronze seats and a solid wedge disc riding on them. That is a metal to metal seat, not a rubber resilient wedge. It gives you a serviceable metal seat that tolerates steam and higher temperature service, where a resilient seated gate valve is the usual choice for buried or cold water duty.
7) Can this gate valve be used for throttling flow?
No. A solid wedge gate valve is an on/off device. Partially opening it puts the wedge in the flow stream, which erodes the seating faces and leaves you with a valve that will not shut tight. Run it fully open or fully closed and use a globe or butterfly valve where you need to regulate flow.
8) Does the Nibco F-637-31 meet a recognized standard for iron gate valves?
It conforms to MSS SP-128, the standard covering ductile iron gate valves. That is the reference to cite on a submittal when the drawing calls for a Class 150 flanged ductile iron OS&Y gate valve.
