Nibco NHAL10X – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco F-637-31 large diameter gate valve come in?
Five large-diameter sizes: 14, 16, 18, 20 and 24 inch. Order by size, MPN NHAL10T for 14 inch, NHAL10U for 16 inch, NHAL10V for 18 inch, NHAL10W for 20 inch and NHAL10X for 24 inch. Anything below 14 inch is a different Nibco iron gate valve body.
2) How does the F-637-31 gate valve connect to the pipe, and do I need to order flange gaskets and bolts?
It is a flanged valve with Class 150 raised face end connections, so it bolts between matching Class 150 raised face companion flanges on each side. The valve ships as the valve only, so the studs, nuts and full-face or ring gaskets for both joints are a separate line on your order. Mating flanges must be Class 150 drilling to line up.
3) Is this Nibco gate valve OS&Y, and why does that matter in a fire protection riser?
Yes, it is an outside screw and yoke design with a bolted bonnet. The stem rises out of the yoke as the gate opens, so anyone walking the riser can see at a glance whether the valve is open or shut, which is exactly what inspectors look for on fire protection service. The stem threads also sit outside the flow path, out of the line media.
4) Can I use this valve on domestic drinking water?
No. The F-637-31 iron gate valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is meant for commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial and pulp and paper service, plus fire protection. For potable water you need a valve certified as lead free for that service.
5) What is the body and seat material on this large diameter Nibco gate valve?
Ductile iron body with bronze seats, an iron body bronze mounted (IBBM) build. The bronze seating and solid wedge give you a metal-to-metal shutoff rather than a resilient seat, which is why it holds up on steam and general utility service rather than being limited to cold water.
6) Should I use a gate valve or a butterfly valve on a 16 inch chilled water main?
A gate valve like the F-637-31 is an isolation valve, full port when open with effectively straight-through flow and very little pressure drop, and it is not meant to sit part open for throttling. A butterfly valve is shorter face to face, lighter to handle at 14 to 24 inch, and can throttle, but the disc stays in the stream. If the 16 inch line is pure shutoff duty and you want the visual open/shut indication of a rising stem, the gate valve is the right call.
7) Can the F-637-31 be repacked or serviced in place without cutting it out of the line?
The bolted bonnet lets you take the bonnet off to reach the stem packing, gland and wedge while the valve body stays bolted between the line flanges. Depressurize and drain the section first. On 14 through 24 inch bodies plan for rigging, these are heavy valves and the bonnet is not a one-man lift.
8) Does this Nibco iron gate valve meet a published valve standard?
It conforms to MSS SP-128, the standard covering ductile iron gate valves. That is the reference to put on a submittal when the spec calls for a ductile iron OS&Y gate valve.
9) Will this gate valve work on a steam line?
Yes, it is rated for saturated steam service as well as hot and cold water, HVAC, gas and general utility. The bronze mounted solid wedge and OS&Y stem are the reason it handles steam where a resilient seated iron valve would not. Check the valve's steam rating against your operating pressure and temperature before you set it.
