1) Can the Nibco F-619 cast iron gate valve be used on potable water?
No. Use of the F-619 iron gate valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Put it on HVAC, heating, steam, gas, irrigation and general utility service instead, and specify a lead-free valve for anything that feeds potable water.
2) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco F-619 gate valve handle?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam up to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). That is standard Class 125 iron valve service, so it suits chilled water, hot water heating and low pressure steam mains.
3) Will the F-619 bolt up to my existing Class 125 flanges?
Yes. The F-619 has Class 125 flanged end connections, so it mates to ANSI/ASME Class 125 cast iron flanges and Class 150 steel flanges with a flat-face gasket and the matching bolt circle for the pipe size. It is available 2 inch through 12 inch.
4) Should I order the handwheel or the square operating nut on the Nibco F-619?
Two operator choices, and both cover the full 2 inch to 12 inch range. The standard handwheel is the normal pick for mechanical rooms and exposed piping where someone turns it by hand. The square operating nut is for valves run with a wrench or a T-key, typically buried, in a valve box, or in a vault where the valve is reached from above. Pick the nut for irrigation mains and the wheel for interior work.
5) Does the Nibco F-619 meet the MSS SP-70 spec called out on my drawings?

6) Does the F-619 gate valve stem rise when you open it?
No, it is a non-rising stem design. The handwheel turns and the stem threads pull the wedge up inside the body, so nothing extends above the valve. That is what you want in a tight chase, a pipe trench or a buried/vault install where headroom over the valve is limited.
7) What sizes does the Nibco F-619 flanged gate valve come in?

Do not use it for throttling, partial opening wears the wedge and seats. If you need throttling or a shorter face-to-face in a tight mechanical room, a butterfly or globe valve is the better fit.
9) Can the F-619 be repacked or serviced in line?
Yes, it has a bolted bonnet rather than a screwed or union bonnet, so the bonnet bolts come off and the wedge, stem and packing are accessible for rebuild without cutting the valve out of the line. The bronze seats are the sealing surfaces to inspect while you are in there.
10) Can I use the F-619 on a buried irrigation main?
Irrigation is a listed application for this valve, and the square operating nut version is the one to order for below-grade work so it can be turned from a valve box with a key. The non-rising stem also keeps the valve profile fixed, which matters in a box. Bolt it to Class 125 flanges and support the weight of the valve independently of the pipe.
