Nibco NHE300D – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can a Nibco F-918-B cast iron swing check valve be installed vertically?
Only in a vertical line where flow moves upward. A swing check relies on gravity and flow to close the disc, so the F-918-B works in horizontal runs or in vertical piping with upward flow. Put it in a downward-flow leg and the disc will not seat.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco F-918-B flanged check valve come in?
Six sizes: 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch. Order by size, for example NHE300D for the 2 inch and NHE300L for the 8 inch. All of them are Class 125 flanged, so the valve bolts between mating Class 125 cast iron flanges without any threading or welding.
3) Can I use the Nibco F-918-B check valve on a potable water line?
No. Use of this cast iron check valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is for non-potable service, irrigation and similar commercial, mechanical and industrial systems. For domestic water you need a lead-free rated check valve instead.
4) What pressure is the Nibco F-918-B rated for?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam to 353 F (178 C). That covers most chilled water, condenser water, irrigation and low pressure steam service. If your system design pressure is above 200 psi cold, this Class 125 body is the wrong valve.
5) Is the Nibco F-918-B check valve repairable, or do I have to replace the whole valve when it leaks by?
Repairable in line. The F-918-B uses a bolted bonnet and a renewable seat and disc, so you can unbolt the top, pull the disc and reface or replace the seating parts without cutting the valve out of the piping. That matters on a large 6 or 8 inch flanged valve where removal means dropping a section of pipe.
6) What standard does the Nibco F-918-B swing check valve conform to?
MSS SP-71 Type 1, the standard for gray iron swing check valves with flanged ends. If a mechanical spec calls out MSS SP-71 Type 1 Class 125 iron body bronze mounted swing check, the F-918-B answers it.
7) Should I use a flanged check valve or a threaded one on a 4 inch line?
At 4 inches and up, flanged is the practical choice, and the F-918-B is flanged in every size from 2 through 8 inch. Threaded iron gets difficult to make up and nearly impossible to service at those diameters, while flanged ends let you unbolt the valve for seat and disc work. Below 2 inches this valve is not an option at all; the smallest size offered is 2 inch.
8) What do I need to order besides the check valve itself to install it?
Flange bolts, nuts and gaskets are the install items, and the valve does not include them. The F-918-B has Class 125 flanged ends, so you need mating Class 125 flanges on the pipe plus a full face gasket and a bolt set sized to that flange. Nothing has to be threaded or soldered.
9) Will a Nibco F-918-B hold back flow in an irrigation main?
That is a listed application for it. The F-918-B is rated for irrigation service at 200 psi cold working pressure, with bronze trim to keep the seat sealing in water service. It is not a backflow preventer and it is not permitted on potable water, so it belongs on the non-potable irrigation side of the system.
