Nibco N00326A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco SI-3 brass swing check valve be installed vertically?
Only in a vertical run where flow is moving up. The SI-3 swing check is built for horizontal installation or vertical-up flow; a swing disc relies on gravity and flow to seat, so flow-down piping will not hold it closed. Plan the orientation before you sweat the joints.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco SI-3 solder check valve come in?
Three sizes: 1 inch (N00326A), 1-1/4 inch (N00326B), and 2 inch (N00326D). All are female solder cup ends, so they sweat directly onto Type L or M copper tube of the matching nominal size.
3) Can I use the Nibco SI-3 check valve on a potable water line?
No. Use of the SI-3 in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a brass swing check for non-potable service such as hydronic heating loops and similar closed systems. For domestic water you need a lead-free rated check valve.
4) Does the SI-3 have threaded ends or solder ends?
Solder only. The end connection is a female solder cup, so it sweats onto copper tube. If the existing piping is threaded iron or you need a union connection, this is the wrong valve body style for that opening.
5) What pressure will the SI-3 brass swing check handle?
200 PSI / 13.8 bar non-shock cold working pressure. That covers typical residential and light commercial water and hydronic pressures with margin, but it is a cold working rating, so do not apply it to steam service.
6) Is the Nibco SI-3 check valve serviceable, or do I have to cut it out if the disc fails?
It uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet can be backed out to reach the disc without disturbing the soldered joints. Disc, bonnet, and seat are all brass.
7) Swing check or spring check for a pump discharge line?
The SI-3 is a swing check, which means low pressure drop and free flow in the open position, but it needs horizontal piping or upward vertical flow to work. A spring-loaded check is what you want if the line runs vertically downward or if you need the valve to close fast to limit water hammer. For a straight horizontal pump discharge, the swing design is the lower-restriction option.
8) Will soldering damage the check valve's internals?
The disc, bonnet, and seat are brass, not soft elastomer, so the assembly tolerates sweating better than a rubber-seated valve. Standard practice still applies: keep the flame on the fitting cup, not the bonnet, and if you are working the 2 inch size where more heat is needed, back the bonnet out first.
