1) Will the Nibco F-607-RWS gate valve bolt to my Class 125 flanged fire main?
Yes. The F-607-RWS is built with Class 125 flanged, flat face end connections, so it bolts directly to standard Class 125 cast iron or ductile iron flanges on a fire main. Sizes run 3, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. If your line is grooved or threaded, this is the wrong body style for it.
2) Is the Nibco F-607-RWS approved for a sprinkler system, and by whom?
Fire protection is what it's made for. The F-607-RWS is Listed by Underwriters Laboratories of the US and Canada under UL 262 and it is FM Approved. It also carries the Polish CNBOP approval CNBOP-PIB-KOT-2019/0103-1005 wydanie 2. Those are the two listings an AHJ or fire marshal looks for on a sprinkler riser or underground service control valve.
3) Can I mount a tamper switch on the Nibco F-607-RWS OS&Y valve?
The stem comes pre-grooved for tamper switch mounting, so a standard OS&Y supervisory switch clamps to the yoke and picks up the groove without you machining anything. That matters because NFPA requires the control valve on a sprinkler system to be supervised, and the rising stem on an OS&Y gives you the visual open/closed indication alongside the electrical supervision. The switch itself is ordered separately.
4) What pressure is the Nibco F-607-RWS rated for on a fire line?
300 psi (20.7 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a 250 psi / 17.2 bar water working pressure rating. That covers standard fire service and high rise standpipe zones where the static plus surge stays inside 300 psi. On tall buildings, check the zone pressure at the valve location before you commit.
5) Should I use a resilient wedge gate valve or a butterfly valve on my fire main?
A resilient wedge gate like the F-607-RWS gives you full bore flow with essentially no obstruction in the waterway and positive drip tight shutoff against the EPDM faced wedge. A butterfly valve keeps a disc in the stream, which costs you friction loss, but it is shorter face to face and cheaper in the large sizes. On a riser or a service entrance where you want a visible rising stem and the least pressure drop, the OS&Y gate is the usual specification. In a tight mechanical room where laying length is the constraint, a butterfly wins.
6) Does the Nibco F-607-RWS have a bypass connection for large sprinkler mains?
It is drilled, tapped and plugged at location "A" for a bypass, so on the larger sizes where you need a bypass line to equalize pressure before opening the main gate, the port is already there under a plug. Pull the plug and pipe it. No field drilling of the body, which would wreck the epoxy coating.
7) Is the Nibco F-607-RWS gate valve suitable for buried or underground fire service?
The body is ductile iron with epoxy coating inside and out per AWWA C-550, and the coating is NSF and FDA certified. In 3 inch and larger it meets or exceeds the performance requirements of AWWA C509 and C515, which are the waterworks resilient wedge standards. That is the coating and standards package used on municipal and fire service water lines. Note it is an OS&Y valve, so the rising stem and yoke need clearance and are typically kept in a pit or indoors rather than direct buried.
8) How do I tell at a glance whether a Nibco OS&Y gate valve is open or shut?
That is the point of the outside screw and yoke design. The stem rises out of the yoke as the gate opens, so a stem standing proud means open and a stem pulled down flush means closed. An inspector walking a riser can read it from across the room, which is why OS&Y is specified where positive shutoff and a quick visual position indicator are required. Pair it with the tamper switch on the pre-grooved stem and you have both visual and electrical supervision.
9) Can the Nibco F-607-RWS be serviced in place without cutting it out of the line?
It uses a bolted bonnet rather than a welded or pressed one, so with the line drained and depressurized you can unbolt the bonnet and get at the stem and wedge for repacking or replacement while the body stays flanged in the pipe. That is the practical difference for an MRO crew maintaining a fire main they cannot afford to cut apart.
10) What is the difference between a resilient wedge and a solid or double disc gate valve for fire service?
A resilient wedge carries a rubber faced gate, EPDM here, that seats against the epoxy coated bore of the body itself. There is no separate machined seat ring to corrode or trap grit, and the rubber conforms to seal drip tight on water that has been sitting still for years. A solid metal wedge relies on metal to metal contact and tends to weep once scale builds up in a stagnant fire line. For sprinkler and standpipe work that sits idle between trips, the resilient wedge is the type that still shuts off tight when you finally need it.
11) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 6 inch OS&Y fire protection gate valve?
The 6 inch F-607-RWS is NIBCO part NS2920K. The rest of the range: 3 inch is NS2920XF, 4 inch is NS2920H, 8 inch is NS2920L, 10 inch is NS2920M and 12 inch is NS2920N. Size is the only thing you specify, the flange drilling, coating and UL/FM listing are the same across all six.
12) Is the EPDM seat on the Nibco F-607-RWS safe for a potable water line as well as fire service?
The epoxy coating on the body is certified to NSF and FDA per AWWA C-550, and the seat seal is EPDM rubber, the standard elastomer for cold potable water. The valve itself is catalogued for fire protection system use. EPDM is not compatible with petroleum products or oils, so keep it on water service.
13) What else do I need to order to install a Nibco F-607-RWS on a sprinkler riser?
Beyond the valve you need Class 125 flange bolt sets and gaskets sized to the flange for each joint, a supervisory tamper switch to clamp on the pre-grooved stem, and if the design calls for a bypass, the fittings to pipe off the tapped port at location "A".
