The NIBCO® ductile iron butterfly valve provides ease of operation with quarter-turn (90 degrees) open to close. The valve features an EPDM encapsulated ductile iron disc. The internal stem/disc splined drive design eliminates the need for pins or bolts that may create leak paths or turbulence in the waterway. An extended neck allows for insulation up to 2 inches. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Choose NIBCO® ductile iron butterfly valves for the most specified, versatile and economical valve option in commercial, mechanical and industrial applications. NIBCO® butterfly valves are backed by the NIBCO 5-year 125% limited warranty.

Nibco NBC-GD-4765 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco GD-4765 butterfly valve connect to my grooved-end steel pipe?
Grooved ends are what this valve ships with, so it drops between grooved pipe ends with standard couplings, no flanges or bolting needed. Sizes run 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch, though 10 inch comes only with the gear operator. If your system is flanged or lug-mounted, this is the wrong body style.
2) Should I order the lever-lock or the gear operator on a Nibco grooved butterfly valve?
Lever-lock gives you a quarter-turn handle with a locking plate, fine for isolation duty and for reaching 90 degrees quickly by hand. It's offered 2 through 8 inch. The manual gear operator is the choice for larger lines, throttling and balancing, or anywhere a handle would be hard to move against pressure; it's the only option at 10 inch and is available all the way down to 2 inch. Bare stem is also a listed operating arrangement if you're mounting an actuator.
3) Can I use this Nibco ductile iron butterfly valve on a steam line?
No. Nibco specifically states this rubber-seated ductile iron butterfly valve is not recommended for steam service. It's built for chilled and hot water, HVAC, commercial plumbing, balancing and control, and industrial liquid service. For steam, use a valve type rated for it.
4) What is the pressure rating on the Nibco GD-4765 butterfly valve?
300 psi WWP (cold working water pressure). That covers most commercial chilled water, condenser water and hot water risers, where system design pressures typically sit well under that. Check it against your engineer's stated system pressure before you spec it on a high-rise standpipe or a high-head pumping loop.
5) Will this valve still work if I insulate the chilled water pipe around it?
Yes, the body has an extended neck that clears up to 2 inches of insulation, so the operator stays accessible and you don't have to notch the jacket back to the stem. That's the detail that matters on chilled water and condenser lines where you're insulating to the valve.
6) What are the disc and stem made of on the Nibco GD-4765?
The disc is ductile iron fully encapsulated in EPDM, so the wetted disc face is elastomer rather than bare iron. The stem is stainless steel running in metal bushings, and it drives the disc through a splined connection instead of pins or through-bolts, which removes the usual leak path and the turbulence those fasteners create in the waterway. EPDM suits water and glycol, not petroleum-based fluids.
7) Can I use this butterfly valve for balancing flow, or is it isolation only?
Nibco lists balancing and control among the intended uses, so it can be throttled as well as used for shutoff. For any real throttling duty order the gear operator version, which holds an intermediate position under flow forces far better than a lever. If you're only isolating a branch, the lever-lock is the simpler pick.
8) What sizes does the Nibco grooved butterfly valve come in?
Eight sizes: 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. Both the lever-lock and gear operator are offered from 2 through 8 inch; 10 inch is gear operator only. Part numbers run NLK680D through NLK680L for lever-lock and NLK690D through NLK690M for the geared version.
9) Do I need a full turn to shut this valve, or is it quarter-turn?
Quarter-turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed. That is the practical argument for a butterfly over a gate valve in a tight mechanical room: far less clearance and far less time to operate, and the lever-lock version lets you lock the disc position once you've set it.
