The NIBCO® ductile iron butterfly valve provides ease of operation with quarter-turn (90 degrees) open to close. The valve's unique molded-in EPDM seat liner with aluminum bronze disc is recommended for most water applications. With the internal stem/disc geometric drive design there is no need for pins or bolts that may create leak paths or turbulence in the waterway. An extended neck allows for insulation up to 2 inches. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Choose NIBCO® ductile iron butterfly valves for the most specified, versatile and economical valve option in commercial, mechanical and industrial applications. NIBCO® butterfly valves are backed by the NIBCO 5-year 125% limited warranty.

Nibco NLH100D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco WD-2000 butterfly valve fit between my existing flanges?
The WD-2000 is a wafer style valve, so it mounts between two pipe flanges and is held by the flange bolts running past the body rather than bolting into the valve itself. That means you need flanges on both sides, and you cannot remove downstream piping while keeping the valve in service. If you need to break the line downstream and keep flow shut off upstream, a lug body valve is the right choice instead of a wafer.
2) What operator options are there on the Nibco WD-2000 butterfly valve, and which one do I need for an 8 inch line?
Four: bare stem, infinite position plate and lock, lever lock, and manual gear operator. Lever lock is the usual pick on the smaller sizes for quick quarter-turn shutoff. On the larger sizes, or anywhere the line pressure makes a lever hard to hold, a gear operator gives you the mechanical advantage and lets you throttle without fighting the disc. Bare stem is what you order when an actuator is being mounted on top.
3) Is the Nibco WD-2000 butterfly valve lead free for potable water?
Yes. The WD-2000 is a lead-free valve and is stated to comply with California Health and Safety Code Section 116875 and Vermont Act 193, the two statutes that govern lead content in potable water components. It is also listed U.S. Coast Guard Category A.
4) Can I insulate the pipe around a Nibco WD-2000 butterfly valve?
Yes, and that is what the extended neck on the WD-2000 is for. It clears insulation up to 2 inches thick, so on chilled water lines the operator and stem sit outside the vapor barrier instead of forcing you to cut the insulation back around the handle.
5) What are the wetted parts on the Nibco WD-2000 butterfly valve made of?
Ductile iron body with a molded-in EPDM seat liner, an aluminum bronze disc, and a stainless steel stem running in copper bushings. The EPDM liner suits most water applications; check a chemical resistance guide before putting EPDM on anything other than water or glycol.
6) Can I use a butterfly valve like the Nibco WD-2000 for throttling, or only for shutoff?
Both, if you order the right operator. A resilient seated butterfly valve like the WD-2000 gives quarter-turn shutoff, and with the infinite position plate and lock or a manual gear operator you can hold the disc part open for balancing. With a plain lever lock you are limited to the detent positions on the plate. For tight throttling control on a small branch, a globe or ball valve is the better tool; the butterfly earns its place on 2 inch and larger mains where a gate or globe valve gets heavy and expensive.
7) Are there pins or bolts through the disc on the Nibco WD-2000 that could leak?
No. The WD-2000 drives the disc through an internal stem and disc geometric drive, so there are no through pins or bolts in the waterway. That removes the usual leak paths at the disc pin and keeps the flow path clear of the turbulence a protruding fastener creates.
