The NIBCO® ductile iron butterfly valve is designed specifically to meet the rigorous requirements of automatic sprinkler systems. The unique EPDM molded-in seat liner with ductile iron disc provides bubble-tight shutoff at rated pressure. With the internal stem/disc geometric drive design there is no need for pins or bolts that may create leak paths or turbulence in the waterway. An extended neck allows for insulation up to 2 inches. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Choose NIBCO® butterfly valves for the most specified, versatile and economical valve option in commercial, mechanical and fire protection systems. NIBCO® butterfly valves are backed by the NIBCO 5-year 125% limited warranty.

Nibco NLH800H – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco WD-3510 butterfly valve work in a wet sprinkler riser that has to be listed and approved?
The WD-3510 ductile iron butterfly valve is UL/ULC Listed and FM Approved, and it is UL Listed for both indoor and outdoor service, so it can be used on the listed side of an automatic sprinkler system. It is also approved by New York City MEA 9-97-E, Vol. 2 when assembled with the appropriate NIBCO indicator flag, and it carries California State Fire Marshal Listing No. 770-1243:104. Rated pressure is 250 psi WWP, which covers standard sprinkler working pressure.
2) Is the Nibco WD-3510 a lug valve or a wafer valve, and can I use it for dead-end service?
It's a wafer body. A wafer valve is clamped between two flanges by the through bolts, so it needs pipe on both sides and is not for dead-end service or downstream disassembly with the line under pressure. If you need to isolate one side of the valve and take the downstream piping apart, you want a lug body with tapped holes instead.
3) Does the Nibco WD-3510 come with tamper switches for connection to the fire alarm panel?
Supervisory switches are a suffix option on this valve family, not a single fixed build: suffix 8N is the version with internal monitor switches, suffix 4N is without. If your alarm contractor needs the valve supervised at the panel, specify the 8N suffix. There are also in-ground post (GP) and wall post (WP) versions, which are UL only.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco WD-3510 fire protection butterfly valve come in?
Two sizes, 4 inch and 6 inch. The 4 inch is MPN NLH800H and the 6 inch is NLH800K. Both are the same wafer-style ductile iron gear-operated valve, so sizing comes down to matching the riser or cross-main diameter.
5) Do I need a handwheel or is the Nibco WD-3510 already geared?
The operating mechanism is a manual gear operator, so the valve ships geared rather than lever-operated. That is what you want on a 4 or 6 inch sprinkler valve: the gear gives you the mechanical advantage to close against line pressure and it holds position instead of springing back.
6) Will the seat on this Nibco sprinkler butterfly valve hold bubble-tight, or does it weep like a metal-seated valve?
The seat is a molded-in EPDM liner working against a ductile iron disc, and it gives bubble-tight shutoff at the 250 psi rated pressure. EPDM is the right elastomer for water service; it is not for petroleum-based fluids. Because the liner is molded in rather than a loose insert, there is no separate seat ring to shift or blow out during operation.
7) Can the Nibco WD-3510 be insulated where it passes through an unheated space?
Yes. The valve has an extended neck that allows for insulation up to 2 inches thick, so the operator and stem stay clear of the pipe insulation instead of being buried in it. That matters on outdoor or unheated runs, and the valve is UL Listed for indoor and outdoor service.
8) Does the Nibco WD-3510 meet MSS SP-67 for the spec on my drawings?
The valve is designed to meet MSS SP-67, the standard for butterfly valves, and its markings follow MSS SP-25. Body material is ductile iron. If the submittal calls out a listed indicating valve for automatic sprinkler service, the UL/ULC Listing and FM Approval carry that side of the spec.
9) Is there anything inside this butterfly valve that can leak or collect debris in the waterway?
No pins or bolts through the disc. The stem-to-disc connection uses an internal geometric drive, so there is no fastener creating a leak path or turbulence in the waterway. The stem is stainless steel running in copper bushings.
10) Can I use this Nibco fire protection butterfly valve on chilled water or general HVAC piping instead of sprinkler?
It is built and listed for automatic sprinkler and fire protection service, with an EPDM seat suited to water. The listings and approvals on it are fire protection listings, and it is priced and specified as a fire valve. For a plain HVAC shutoff with no listing requirement, a standard rubber-seated butterfly valve does the same job without paying for the UL/FM approvals.
