1) Will the Nibco LD-3510 butterfly valve work in a fire sprinkler riser, and is it listed for it?
That's exactly what the LD-3510 is built for. It's a ductile iron butterfly valve for fire protection and automatic sprinkler systems, UL/ULC Listed and FM Approved, and UL Listed for both indoor and outdoor service. It also carries California State Fire Marshal Listing No. 770-1243:104 and is approved by New York City MEA 9-97-E, Vol.2 when assembled with the appropriate NIBCO indicator flag. If your AHJ wants listing documentation for the sprinkler control valve, those are the marks it carries.
2) Is the LD-3510 a lug body or a wafer body, and can I use it at the end of a line?
Lug body. The LD-3510 has tapped lugs on the body, so it bolts to each flange independently. That means you can isolate or dead-end the valve and remove downstream piping with the valve holding pressure on the upstream side, which a wafer body sandwiched between two flanges cannot do. It's the reason lug style is the usual pick for a sprinkler control valve or a riser takeoff where a branch may be serviced later.
3) Do I need to order the LD-3510 with a tamper switch, or is that separate?
You specify it on the valve. Suffix 8N gets you the valve with internal supervisory monitor switches built in; suffix 4N is the same valve without them. If the sprinkler control valve has to be electrically supervised back to the fire alarm panel, order the 8N and you don't need to add an external strap-on tamper switch. There are also in-ground post (suffix GP) and wall post (suffix WP) versions, UL only.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco LD-3510 come in?
Nine sizes, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. So a full sprinkler riser and its branch mains are covered off one valve series, which is what you want when you're standardizing a building on one gear operator and one spare parts list. Order by size: 2 inch is NLG800D, 4 inch is NLG800H, 6 inch is NLG800K, 8 inch NLG800L, 12 inch NLG800N.
5) Is the LD-3510 gear operated or lever handle?
Manual gear operator, on every size from 2 through 12 inch. A gear operator gives you controlled opening against flow (important on a wet system where slamming a disc shut can spike the line) and it holds position without a locking plate. It also gives you a place for the supervisory switch and indicator to read open or shut, which is what an inspector looks for on a control valve.
6) Can the LD-3510 be insulated, and how much clearance is there at the stem?
The LD-3510 has an extended neck that allows for insulation up to 2 inches. That matters on chilled water or on sprinkler piping run through unconditioned space: you can carry the pipe insulation right up to the valve body without having to build a box around the operator or leave a cold spot at the bonnet.
7) What is the seat and disc made of on the Nibco LD-3510, and will it hold bubble-tight?
EPDM molded-in seat liner running against a ductile iron disc, and it gives bubble-tight shutoff at the rated 250 psi. Molded-in means the liner is bonded into the body rather than being a drop-in rubber sleeve that can shift or roll under flow. EPDM is the right elastomer for water and glycol-based fire protection service; it is not the choice for petroleum-based fluids.
8) Does the Nibco LD-3510 meet MSS standards for a spec submittal?
It conforms to MSS SP-67 and MSS SP-25. SP-67 is the butterfly valve standard engineers usually cite on a mechanical schedule, and SP-25 covers the marking on the body so the size, pressure class and manufacturer are legible on the valve at inspection. Pair that with the UL/ULC Listing and FM Approval and it carries what a typical fire protection submittal asks for.
9) I need a post indicator valve for a buried fire main. Is this the right one?
For a buried main you'd want the in-ground post version, ordered as suffix GP; for a valve mounted on a building wall it's the wall post version, suffix WP. Both are UL only. The standard LD-3510 as configured is the gear-operated lug valve for interior riser and mechanical room service, so specify GP or WP up front rather than trying to adapt a standard valve to post service later.
10) Is there anything through the waterway on this valve that can leak or trap debris?
No pins or bolts through the flow path. The disc is driven off an internal stem/disc geometric drive, so there's no taper pin or through-bolt creating a leak path at the stem or an obstruction in the waterway. The stem is stainless steel running in copper bushings. On a sprinkler main where the water sits still for years, fewer fastener penetrations through the disc is one less place to seize or weep.
11) Can I use the Nibco LD-3510 on chilled water or HVAC piping, not just sprinkler?
Yes. NIBCO positions the ductile iron butterfly valve for commercial, mechanical and fire protection systems, and the EPDM seat with the 250 psi water rating suits chilled water and hot water HVAC service as well as sprinkler.
