Nibco NBC-LD-2000 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will a Nibco LD-2000 lug butterfly valve work as an end-of-line isolation valve so I can service downstream piping?
Lug body, which is what makes that possible. The LD-2000 has a lug end connection, so the bolt holes are tapped and each flange bolts independently into the body. You can unbolt the downstream flange and take the piping apart while the valve holds pressure on the upstream side. A wafer body cannot do that, since it is only sandwiched between two flanges and needs both to stay in place. The valve is rated 200 PSI.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco LD-2000 butterfly valve come in, and does every size take a lever handle?
Sizes run 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. The lever-lock handle is only offered through 8 inch (models NLG100D through NLG100L). At 10 and 12 inch you order the gear operator, NLG110M and NLG110N. Gear operators are also available on every smaller size if you want the same operation across a mechanical room.
3) Can I use the Nibco LD-2000 on a chilled water or hot water HVAC system, and how hot can it go?
Yes for both. The EPDM molded-in seat with an aluminum bronze disc is the water combination, and the LD-2000 is listed for commercial plumbing, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and mining service. Temperature limit is 225 degrees F continuous and 250 degrees F intermittent. Do not put it on steam, that is specifically excluded.
4) Is the Nibco LD-2000 butterfly valve lead-free for potable water?
Lead-free, and the LD-2000 is built to California Health and Safety Code Section 116875 and Vermont Act 193, the two statutes most jurisdictions follow for potable water wetted components. That is the compliance line an institutional or municipal spec normally asks for.
5) Should I spec a lever handle or a gear operator on a butterfly valve?
Lever-lock is the quicker one to operate, a quarter turn from open to closed, and it lets you set and lock intermediate positions for balancing. It gets hard to turn as size and differential pressure climb, which is why the LD-2000 stops offering it above 8 inch. Gear operators take a handwheel and many turns, but they are self-locking, will not slam, and are the practical choice on large lines or any valve mounted where someone has to reach it from a ladder. Gear is also the starting point if the valve is later automated.
6) Does the Nibco LD-2000 butterfly valve meet MSS SP-67 and API 609?
The LD-2000 is designed to meet MSS SP-67 for butterfly valves and API 609, with markings per MSS SP-25. It also carries U.S. Coast Guard Category A. Those four are what a mechanical spec or a marine submittal usually calls out.
7) Can I insulate the pipe up to the valve without burying the handle?
The LD-2000 has an extended neck that clears insulation up to 2 inches thick, so the operator sits above the jacket on chilled water and hot water lines. That is the detail that decides whether an insulator has to build a box around the valve.
8) I need to actuate a butterfly valve for a BAS. Can the Nibco LD-2000 take an electric or pneumatic actuator?
Yes. The LD-2000 accepts bare stem, infinite position plate and lock, lever lock, manual gear operator, and pneumatic or electric automation. For an actuated installation order the bare stem or gear configuration rather than a lever, and the lug body means you can pull the valve out for actuator service without dropping the whole run.
9) Will a lug butterfly valve bolt to my existing flanges, and do I need gaskets?
A lug body drops between two mating flanges and the tapped lugs take the flange bolts from each side. The molded-in EPDM seat liner faces out over the body seating surfaces and seals against the flange faces, so separate flange gaskets are not used on a rubber-seated butterfly valve. Match the flange drilling to the pipe size you order, 2 through 12 inch on the LD-2000.
10) Is there anything inside a Nibco LD-2000 that can leak at the disc, like pins or through-bolts?
No pins or bolts through the disc. The stem and disc use an internal geometric drive, so there is no fastener passing into the waterway to create a leak path or turbulence. The stem is stainless steel running in copper bushings, and the body is ductile iron.
11) What is the exact Nibco part number for a 6 inch lug butterfly valve with a lever handle?
NLG100K is the 6 inch LD-2000 with the lever-lock handle. If you want the same size geared instead, that is NLG110K. The pattern runs across the range, NLG100 for lever-lock and NLG110 for gear, with the trailing letter setting the size.
12) Can I throttle flow with the Nibco LD-2000 or is it open/closed only?
It can hold a partly open position. The lever-lock and the infinite position plate and lock both let you set the disc short of full open and lock it there, which is how these get used for balancing a branch. Full travel is a quarter turn.
