The unique molded-in Buna-N seat liner with aluminum bronze disc provides good abrasion resistance properties and compatibility with solvents, oil, water and hydraulic fluid for compressed air and vacuum applications. 1) What is the difference between a lug body butterfly valve and a wafer type, and why does it matter for my piping?
The Nibco LD-2100 is a lug body valve, meaning it has threaded lugs around the body that bolt independently to each flange. That lets you unbolt and remove the downstream pipe while the valve holds the line, so it can serve as an isolation or end-of-line valve. A wafer valve is just clamped between two flanges and both sides must stay bolted. If you need to service equipment downstream of the valve without draining the whole system, the lug body is the one to buy.
2) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco LD-2100 butterfly valve handle, and can I use it on steam?
Rated at 200 PSI with a maximum temperature of 180 degrees F. It is not recommended for steam service. For hot water heating loops, chilled water, condenser water, compressed air and vacuum it is within range, but anything above 180 degrees F or any steam line needs a different valve.
3) Which operator should I order on a Nibco LD-2100, lever lock or gear?
Three operator choices are offered. Lever-lock gives a quarter-turn handle with a locking plate and is available from 2 inch through 8 inch. The manual gear operator is available across the full 2 inch through 12 inch range and is the practical pick on larger sizes where line pressure makes a lever hard to break open, and where you want throttling control. Bare stem comes with no handle at all, 2 inch through 12 inch, and is what you order when an actuator or a chain wheel is being mounted. Operator choice does not change the body, seat or disc.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco LD-2100 come in?
Sizes run 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10 and 12 inch. The full span is available with bare stem or gear operator; the lever-lock handle tops out at 8 inch.
5) Is this butterfly valve lead-free for potable water plumbing?
The LD-2100 is listed lead-free and is catalogued for commercial plumbing, HVAC and industrial service. Wetted parts are an aluminum bronze disc, a molded-in Buna-N seat liner, and a stainless steel stem with copper bushings.
6) What fluids is the Buna-N seat compatible with?
The molded-in Buna-N nitrile seat with the aluminum bronze disc handles water, oil, solvents and hydraulic fluid, plus compressed air and vacuum service, and the rubber gives good abrasion resistance. Buna-N is not a steam seat, and the valve is not recommended for steam. For chemicals outside that list, check Nibco's chemical resistance data before committing.
7) Can I insulate the pipe around this valve without burying the handle?
Yes. The LD-2100 has an extended neck sized for insulation up to 2 inches thick, so on chilled water lines the operator and stem stay clear of the jacket.
8) What standards does the Nibco LD-2100 meet for a spec submittal?
It is designed to meet MSS SP-67 and API 609, carries MSS SP-25 markings, and is U.S. Coast Guard Category A. Body material is ductile iron, end connection is lug, rated 200 PSI.
9) Can I automate the Nibco LD-2100 later with an electric or pneumatic actuator?
Yes. The valve is offered with bare stem specifically for mounting pneumatic or electric automation, and Nibco lists bare stem, infinite position plate and lock, lever lock, manual gear operator and pneumatic/electric automation as the operating mechanisms for the line. Order the bare stem version in your size if the actuator is being supplied separately.
10) Is the disc pinned to the stem on this valve, and can that leak?
No pins or bolts. The LD-2100 uses an internal geometric stem-to-disc drive, so there is no through-pin creating a leak path to atmosphere or a protrusion causing turbulence in the waterway. That removes the most common wear and leak point on older rubber-seated butterfly valves.
