The NIBCO® ductile iron butterfly valve provides ease of operation with quarter-turn (90 degrees) open to close. With the internal stem/disc geometric drive design there is no need for pins or bolts that may create leak paths or turbulence in the waterway. An extended neck allows for insulation up to 2 inches. The unique molded-in EPDM seat liner with stainless steel disc is recommended for chemical applications the liner compatibility will permit. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Choose NIBCO® butterfly valves for the most specified, versatile and economical valve option in commercial, mechanical and industrial applications. NIBCO® butterfly valves are backed by the NIBCO 5-year 125% limited warranty.

Nibco NLG243D – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco LD-3022 butterfly valve work as a bubble-tight isolation valve at the end of a run so I can service downstream equipment?
Lug body, so yes. The LD-3022 is a lug-type ductile iron butterfly valve, meaning the body is tapped on both sides and bolts into each flange independently. You can unbolt the downstream pipe and leave the valve holding the line, which a wafer valve cannot do because a wafer body is only sandwiched between two flanges. That makes it the right choice at a pump, coil, cooling tower or any takeoff you plan to break for service.
2) Can I use this Nibco ductile iron butterfly valve on a low pressure steam line?
No. The LD-3022 is not recommended for steam service. It is a rubber seated valve with a molded-in EPDM liner, and EPDM will not hold up to steam. Use it on chilled water, hot water heating, condenser water, irrigation and general industrial liquid service instead, and specify a valve built for steam on the steam side of the plant.
3) Will an EPDM seated butterfly valve handle glycol and chemical treated water?
The EPDM liner with the stainless steel disc is the combination Nibco recommends for chemical applications where the liner itself is compatible. EPDM covers water, glycol solutions and most water treatment chemistry, and the stainless disc means the wetted flow element is not cast iron. It is not the right liner for petroleum products or hydrocarbon oils. Nibco publishes chemical resistance data by fluid, and that is what to check the specific chemical against before committing.
4) Do I need flange gaskets with a Nibco lug butterfly valve?
No separate gaskets. The molded-in EPDM liner on the LD-3022 extends across the body face and seals against the flange, so the liner is the gasket. Adding a flat gasket on top of it distorts the seal and can prevent the disc from seating. What you do need is the right bolt length: lug bodies take cap screws or studs into the tapped holes from each side, not the through bolts a wafer valve uses.
5) Will the disc hit my pipe when I open this butterfly valve?
It can, and it is the most common installation mistake on butterfly valves. The disc swings past the face of the body as it opens, so the LD-3022 needs the mating pipe bore to clear it. Watch for it where the valve bolts to a reducing flange, a wafer check, a rubber lined or heavily coated pipe, or a fitting with a thick wall. Set the valve with the disc slightly cracked open when you make up the bolts, then open it fully before the line is pressurized to confirm the disc swings clear.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco LD-3022 butterfly valve come in?
Seven sizes, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 inch. Order by the MPN that matches the line size: NLG243D for 2 inch, NLG243E for 2-1/2, NLG243F for 3, NLG243H for 4, NLG243J for 5, NLG243K for 6 and NLG243L for 8. If you are standardizing a mechanical room, the 5 inch is worth noting since a lot of butterfly lines skip it and force a reducer.
7) Will insulation clear the operator on this butterfly valve?
The extended neck on the LD-3022 allows for insulation up to 2 inches thick, so the handle or gear operator sits clear of the pipe covering on chilled water and hot water lines. That is the detail that decides whether the insulation contractor has to cut and box around the valve after you set it.
8) Is the Nibco LD-3022 butterfly valve built to a recognized valve standard?
It is designed to meet MSS SP-67, the standard for butterfly valves, and carries MSS SP-25 markings. It also holds U.S. Coast Guard Category A acceptance, which matters if you are specifying for marine or shipboard work.
9) What holds the disc to the stem on this valve, and can it leak there?
Nothing pins through it. The LD-3022 uses an internal stem and disc geometric drive, so torque transfers by the shape of the connection rather than through pins or bolts. That removes the through-holes that create leak paths on pinned designs and keeps the waterway free of the turbulence a protruding fastener causes. The stem is stainless steel running in stainless steel bushings.
10) Is a butterfly valve or a ball valve the better choice for 2 inch and up shutoff in a mechanical room?
At 2 inch and larger, a lug butterfly valve like the LD-3022 is usually the cheaper and lighter answer, and it is a quarter turn open to close the same as a ball valve. It flanges into the line instead of threading, which is what you want above 2 inch where threaded joints get hard to make up in place. A ball valve gives you full port flow with no obstruction in the stream, so it still wins on small threaded branch lines and where you need a straight-through bore. For a mechanical room full of 3 to 8 inch flanged headers, butterfly is the standard call.
11) Can I use this valve for throttling flow, or only for open and shut?
It will throttle. The LD-3022 can be ordered with an infinite position plate and lock or a manual gear operator, both of which hold the disc at an intermediate position, and a butterfly disc gives usable control through the mid range of travel. Balancing near the closed position is hard on any rubber seated valve, so set the throttle position off the seat rather than cracked open.
