1) Can I use the Nibco F-718-B iron globe valve for throttling, or is it on/off only?
Throttling is what this valve is built for. The F-718-B is a globe valve with a renewable seat and disc arrangement, so it regulates flow rather than just opening and closing. If you only need isolation with minimal pressure drop, a gate or ball valve is the better pick; globe pattern costs you head loss in exchange for control.
2) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco F-718-B globe valve handle?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam up to 353 F / 178 C. That steam rating is why it shows up on commercial heating and HVAC mains as well as general mechanical piping.
3) How does the F-718-B connect to the pipe, and will it bolt to my existing Class 125 flanges?
It has Class 125 flanged ends, so it bolts straight to companion ANSI/ASME Class 125 cast iron flanges of the same size with a gasket and bolt set. Flanges, bolts, nuts and gaskets are not part of the valve, so order those separately. Class 125 and Class 150 drilling match at most common sizes, but the valve itself is rated Class 125.
4) Is the Nibco F-718-B approved for potable water?
No. Use of this iron globe valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it on heating, HVAC and non-potable mechanical service, and specify a lead-free rated valve for anything feeding potable lines.
5) Can the seat and disc be replaced without pulling the valve out of the line?
Yes. The F-718-B uses a bolted bonnet with a renewable seat and disc, so a maintenance crew can unbolt the bonnet, service or swap the internals, and put it back together with the body still flanged into the piping. That is the main reason facilities groups spec bolted bonnet iron valves over throwaway designs.
