1) Will the Nibco T-256-AP bronze globe valve work on a steam line?
Yes, and steam is what it's built around. The T-256-AP is rated 200 psi / 13.8 bar saturated steam to 391F / 201C, and 400 psi / 27.6 bar non-shock cold working pressure. The union bonnet lets you pull the valve apart in line to service the seat without cutting it out of the piping, which is what you want on a steam service that gets worked on.
2) Can I use the Nibco T-256-AP on potable drinking water?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014, so keep the T-256-AP off potable lines. It belongs on steam, heating, HVAC and industrial process piping. For domestic water you need a lead-free bronze valve carrying that designation instead.
3) What size pipe does the Nibco T-256-AP globe valve come in, and how does it connect?
Eight sizes: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Every one is female NPT thread (FIPT) on both ends, Class 200 threaded, so it screws onto male-threaded pipe nipples or threaded adapters. Nothing to solder. If your line is copper you'll need male adapters at each end to land it.
4) Does the Nibco T-256-AP meet MSS SP-80 for a spec job?
Yes. The valve conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, and it's a Class 200 threaded end valve. If the drawing calls for an MSS SP-80 Class 200 bronze globe valve with threaded ends, the T-256-AP answers it.
5) What is the difference between a full plug disc globe valve and a standard disc one?
The plug disc has a long tapered seating surface rather than a flat face, so it meets the seat over a distance instead of at a line. That gives you closer throttling of flow and holds up better where the valve sits part open and the fluid cuts at the seat, which is why it's the choice for higher pressure steam. If you only ever run the valve fully open or fully shut, a standard disc does that job. The T-256-AP's disc is stainless steel and renewable, so a wire-drawn disc is a parts change, not a valve change.
6) Should I use a globe valve or a ball valve for throttling a heating loop?
Globe valve, if you actually need to regulate flow. A ball valve is an on/off device, and running one part open erodes the seats. The T-256-AP is built for the throttling duty, with a full plug disc for close flow control and a renewable stainless disc plus a replaceable seat so the wear parts can be changed out. The trade-off is head loss: a globe valve turns the flow twice through the body, so it drops more pressure than a ball or gate valve of the same size. For an isolation valve you'll never modulate, use a ball valve.
7) Is the Nibco T-256-AP suitable for a hot water system with aggressive water chemistry?
The bronze body is dezincification resistant, so it stands up to water that leaches zinc out of ordinary brass and leaves the part porous and weak. That's the failure mode that shows up as pink, chalky brass on hydronic and older domestic systems. For a specific chemical service, Nibco publishes chemical resistance guides for the bronze globe and angle valve line.
8) Can I rebuild the Nibco T-256-AP in place instead of replacing the whole valve?
That's the point of the union bonnet. The bonnet unscrews at the union nut, so the seat and disc come out with the piping left alone. Both wear parts are serviceable: the seat is replaceable and the stainless steel full plug disc is renewable. On a screwed-bonnet valve you'd be cutting and re-threading pipe to do the same job. Worth noting for anyone standardizing an MRO parts stock across a building.
9) Does a bronze globe valve have to be installed in a particular direction?
Yes, flow direction matters on a globe valve in a way it does not on a ball or gate valve. The body is directional, so match the flow arrow on the T-256-AP body when you pipe it in, and give yourself clearance above the valve for the rising stem and for pulling the union bonnet later. Both ends are female NPT, so the valve is landed on male threaded pipe with the correct orientation before you tighten.
