Nibco NL3ZN0A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Nibco T-276-AP bronze globe valve on potable water?
No. The T-276-AP is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's built for commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC and industrial service, so keep it on steam, hydronic and process lines and specify a lead-free valve for anything feeding potable water.
2) What steam pressure is the Nibco T-276-AP globe valve rated for?
300 psi (20.7 bar) saturated steam up to 421 degrees F (216 degrees C), and 600 psi (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure. That puts it in Class 300 territory, which is where it earns its place over a Class 125 bronze globe valve on a high pressure steam header or a process line that sees real pressure.
3) How does the T-276-AP globe valve connect to pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. Both ends are female NPT thread (FIPT), Class 300 threaded, so it screws straight onto threaded pipe or onto a threaded nipple off a grooved or welded system. That also means you can pull it out later without cutting pipe, which matters on a valve you'll be reseating.
4) Should I use a globe valve or a ball valve for throttling flow?
For throttling, the globe valve. A ball valve is an on/off device and wears its seat fast when parked part open. The T-276-AP uses a renewable stainless steel full plug disc, which is the design specifically meant for closer throttling of flow, so it holds a partly open position without chewing itself up. Use ball valves for isolation and keep this one where you need to set and hold a flow rate.
5) Can the seat and disc be replaced without taking the T-276-AP out of the line?
That's the point of the design. The union bonnet lets you break the valve open in place, and both the stainless steel seat ring and the full plug disc are renewable. On a steam system where a globe valve is expected to be reseated over its life, that saves cutting threaded pipe every time it starts passing.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-276-AP come in?
Eight sizes, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, all female NPT. Small sizes like the 1/4 inch (MPN NL3ZN04) suit gauge and instrument drops; the 2 inch (NL3ZN0D) is the top of the range, so anything larger on the same system needs a different valve body style.
7) Is the Nibco T-276-AP globe valve MSS SP-80 compliant?
Yes, the T-276-AP conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. If a mechanical spec or a submittal calls for an MSS SP-80 Class 300 bronze globe valve with a union bonnet, this meets that call.
8) Will a bronze globe valve hold up in hard or aggressive water without the zinc leaching out?
The T-276-AP body is bronze and dezincification resistant, so it resists the zinc loss that turns ordinary brass porous and crumbly in aggressive water. Paired with the stainless seat ring and stainless plug disc, the wetted parts are the ones that take the abuse.
9) What's the difference between a full plug disc and a standard composition disc globe valve?
The full plug disc on the T-276-AP is a long tapered stainless plug that meters flow gradually as it lifts, which is what gives you close throttling control. A composition disc is a flat soft seat, better at tight shutoff on water at lower pressure but poor at holding a throttled position and not suited to 300 psi saturated steam at 421 degrees F. Pick the plug disc when the valve's job is regulating, not just closing.
