1) Will this PVC check valve bolt up to my existing Class 150 steel flanges?
Yes. The flanged ends on the F45BC-E match ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt patterns, so it lands on standard Class 150 companion flanges. It is a flanged connection, not socket or threaded, so you bolt it in rather than solvent weld it. Use a full-face gasket and do not over-torque the bolts, since the body is PVC and not steel.
2) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco Chemtrol F45BC-E ball check valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on non-shock water service, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. Pressure capability drops as temperature climbs toward that ceiling, so size the line for the hottest condition it will see, not the ambient one. Water and compatible liquids only.
3) Can I use this PVC ball check valve on compressed air?
No. The instruction on Chemtrol PVC valves is explicit: do not use or test with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the line with air. Hydrostatic test with water only. If you need check protection on a compressed air line, this is the wrong material family entirely.
4) Is the Nibco F45BC-E approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is listed as a lead-free application, which is what a potable water spec normally asks for. It also meets ASTM F1970. Typical uses are commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service.
5) Can I service this check valve without cutting the pipe out?
That is the point of the True Union design. The union nuts back off and the valve and its internal components lift straight out of the line for repair or ball replacement, leaving the flanged ends bolted in place. On a flanged installation you also have the option of breaking the bolted joint. Plan roughly a valve body's length of clearance so you can lift it clear.
6) Should I pick EPDM or Viton seals for a PVC ball check valve?
The F45BC-E is the EPDM version, with EPDM O-rings and EPDM seat sealing. EPDM handles water, dilute acids and bases, and most irrigation and potable water duty. It is the wrong choice for petroleum products and oils, where a fluoroelastomer seal is the usual call. Check the fluid against the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide before you commit, and note the separate POE plastics incompatibility warning Nibco publishes for these valves.
7) Does a ball check valve like this have to be mounted a certain way?
Yes, orientation matters on a ball check. The ball seats by gravity and by reverse flow, so these are normally installed in horizontal runs or in vertical runs with flow going up, following the flow arrow on the body. Mounted with flow running down, the ball will not seat reliably. If your layout is a downward vertical leg, use a spring-loaded check instead of this ball-check type.
8) Why choose PVC Schedule 80 over metal for a check valve in a corrosive line?
Schedule 80 PVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. It is also light enough that a 3 or 4 inch flanged valve can be handled and hung without the support a metal body needs. The trade-off is the 140 degree F ceiling and the ban on gas service, which is where metal still wins.
9) What color is the Nibco Chemtrol PVC valve body, and does that tell me the material?
Dark grey, which is the standard color convention for Schedule 80 PVC and how it is told apart from white Schedule 40 PVC and from CPVC on a jobsite walk. If the rest of your run is grey Sch 80, this matches.
