The original Chemtrol® True Union design allows the valve and operational components to be conveniently lifted from the piping system for repair or replacement. The valve can be easily joined with the socket end connections. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, valve selection guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance properties and has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping systems. Chemtrol® PVC valves are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Choose Chemtrol® valves for the most reliable, versatile and economical valve option in commercial and industrial applications. Chemtrol® valves are backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control valves are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco MA817AF – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S45BC-E ball check valve come in?
Two sizes: 3 inch (MPN MA817AF) and 4 inch (MPN MA817AH). Both are PVC Schedule 80 with socket end connections, so they solvent weld directly onto Schedule 80 PVC pipe of the matching nominal size.
2) Can I use this PVC check valve on a compressed air line?
No. The S45BC-E is for liquid service only, and the product data states plainly not to use or test it with compressed air or other gases. Pressure testing with air on a PVC valve or PVC pipe risks sudden failure. Use water for testing, and pick a metal valve rated for air if the line carries gas.
3) What pressure and temperature can the S45BC-E ball check valve handle?
Rated 150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. PVC loses pressure capacity as temperature climbs, so the full 150 psi only applies near 73 degrees F. For hot water or steam runs this is the wrong material.
4) Do I have to cut the pipe out to service this check valve?
No. It uses the Chemtrol True Union design, which means the valve body and its internal working parts can be lifted out of the line for repair or ball replacement without cutting the solvent welded socket ends off the pipe. That is the main reason to pay for a true union check valve instead of a single-body one in a line you expect to maintain.
5) Is this ball check valve approved for potable water?
The S45BC-E is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and is flagged lead-free. It also meets ASTM F1970 for thermoplastic valves. Those are the certifications an institutional or municipal spec normally calls for on a plastic potable water valve.
6) Does this socket valve need glue, or can I thread it in?
Socket only. The ends are S socket, so they are solvent cemented with PVC primer and Schedule 80 grade cement onto the outside diameter of the pipe. There is no thread on the connection. If the line is threaded, you either need a threaded-end version of the valve or a pair of PVC male adapters cemented into the sockets.
7) Why choose EPDM O-rings instead of Viton in a PVC check valve?
The E suffix on S45BC-E means EPDM elastomers, both the O-rings and the seat seal. EPDM suits water, most dilute acids and bases, and is the common pick for potable water, irrigation and general chemical process lines. It is not the right choice for petroleum oils or POE-type lubricants, and Nibco publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering that. If your media is oil based or an aggressive solvent, order the FKM/Viton version instead.
8) Which way does a ball check valve have to be installed?
A ball check relies on a free floating ball seating under reverse flow, so it must be installed in the flow direction marked on the body and, as a class, needs the correct orientation to reseat properly. Confirm the arrow on the body before solvent welding, because once the socket joints cure you are cutting pipe to turn it around.
9) Will this valve hold up in an irrigation or industrial chemical line?
That is what it is built for. The system uses listed are commercial plumbing, industrial, irrigation and lead-free service, and PVC Schedule 80 gives corrosion resistance plus the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for pipe. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it gets specified in buried irrigation mains and chemical feed skids over metal.
10) Will this dark grey valve match the rest of my Schedule 80 PVC run?
Yes. The valve is dark grey PVC, the standard color for Schedule 80 pipe and fittings, so it blends into an existing Sch 80 system visually and matches on material for solvent welding. White pipe on a job is usually Schedule 40; you can still cement a Sch 80 socket valve to Sch 40 pipe of the same nominal size, but the system rating drops to the weakest component.
