1) Can I solvent weld this Chemtrol PVC check valve, or is it threaded only?
Threaded only. The T45BC-E has female NPT sockets on both ends, so it joins with threaded male ends and PTFE tape or approved thread sealant. If your line is solvent cemented, you will need male adapters at each side, or a socket-end version of the valve instead.
2) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the T45BC-E PVC ball check valve?
150 psi at 73 F on non-shock water service, with a maximum service temperature of 140 F. PVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so hot process lines running near the 140 F ceiling should be de-rated or moved to a different material.
3) Can I use this PVC check valve on a compressed air line?
No. Nibco states plainly that this valve must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pneumatic pressure testing after install. Hydrostatic test with water only.
4) Is the Nibco T45BC-E approved for potable water?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and also carries ASTM F1970. The application data lists it as lead-free, and system uses include commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation.
5) What are the seals made of on the T45BC-E, and will they handle my chemical?
Seat and O-ring sealing is EPDM rubber, and the body is PVC. EPDM suits water, dilute acids and bases, and most irrigation and general industrial water service. It is not the choice for petroleum oils or hydrocarbons; Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE and similar refrigerant oils. If your media is oil based, specify a different elastomer.
6) Do I have to cut the pipe to service a true union ball check valve?
No, that is the point of the true union body. The union nuts back off so the valve body and the internal ball and seat lift straight out of the line for cleaning or replacement, with the end connectors left threaded into the piping. On a 3 or 4 inch line that saves a rework of the whole assembly.
7) Does a ball check valve like this need to be installed a certain way?
Yes. A ball check relies on the ball unseating with flow and dropping back onto the seat to stop reverse flow, so it must go in with the flow arrow in the direction of travel. Orientation matters for the ball to reseat, so follow the Chemtrol technical data sheet for the valve before setting it in a vertical run.
8) Will this valve match the grey Schedule 80 PVC already on my system?
It is dark grey PVC Schedule 80, the standard color for Sch 80 industrial PVC piping, so it visually matches typical grey Sch 80 lines. Confirm your line is Sch 80 rather than Sch 40 white, since the pressure class and wall thickness differ.
