1) Does the Nibco U45BC-E ball check valve come with socket or threaded ends?
Both. The U45BC-E ships with universal end connections, meaning socket and female NPT threaded ends are included in the box, so you decide at install whether to solvent weld it into Schedule 80 PVC pipe or thread it to an existing NPT connection. That is useful on a retrofit where the run is glued but the equipment side is threaded, and it means you do not have to stock two different valves for the same size.
2) Can I service this Chemtrol true union check valve without cutting the pipe out?
No cutting needed. The true union design lets you back off the union nuts and lift the valve body and internals out of the line for cleaning, ball replacement or O-ring replacement, then drop it back in. That is the main reason to spec a true union check over a fixed-body one on a system you expect to maintain, since a stuck or fouled check ball on a fixed valve usually means cutting and re-gluing a section of pipe.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco U45BC-E PVC check valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F with non-shock water, and a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. Two things to watch: the pressure rating is stated at 73 degrees F, so a system running warm is not getting the full 150 psi, and it is a water valve only. Do not use or test it with compressed air or other gases.
4) Is the U45BC-E ball check valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 certification and is listed as a lead-free application, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable water service. It also meets ASTM F1970. Rated uses include commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
5) What pipe sizes does the Nibco U45BC-E true union ball check valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Each size is its own part number, running MA817U6 for the 1/2 inch through MA817UD for the 2 inch. Since the end connections are universal, one size covers both socket and threaded piping.
6) Will an EPDM seal check valve hold up in my chemical feed line?
The U45BC-E uses EPDM O-rings and EPDM seat seal with a PVC Schedule 80 body. EPDM does well with water and many aqueous chemicals but is not the choice for petroleum-based fluids or oils, which is exactly the incompatibility Nibco warns about in its POE plastics warning sheet linked with the valve. If your media is oil or POE refrigerant oil based, check that sheet before you install PVC. For a straight water, irrigation or general industrial line, EPDM is the standard seal.
7) Should I use a ball check or a spring check valve on a PVC irrigation line?
A ball check like the U45BC-E has no spring and no swing arm, just a ball that lifts off the seat with flow and drops back to block reverse flow. That means very little to fail or corrode, which is why it suits irrigation and industrial water lines where the valve sits untouched for long stretches. A spring check adds a cracking pressure and will close against gravity in any orientation, so it is the pick where the line runs down or the valve has to seat instantly. For a PVC Schedule 80 line where you want a maintenance-free valve you can still open up later, the true union ball check is the simpler choice.
8) Do I need extra unions or adapters to install this PVC check valve?
No. The union nuts are part of the valve, so you do not buy separate unions to make it serviceable, and the universal ends mean no socket-to-thread adapter on either side. All you add is the correct primer and solvent cement if you are gluing it in, or thread sealant rated for plastic if you are threading it.
9) Does a ball check valve have to be installed vertically or can it go horizontal?
A ball check relies on a free-moving ball seating against the flow, so it must be installed with flow in the direction marked on the body. Orientation matters on this style more than on a spring check, since gravity helps return the ball to its seat. Follow the Chemtrol technical data sheet and valve selection guide for the installation position on your line. What the U45BC-E gives you either way is the true union body, so if you get it in and want to re-orient or service it, you break the unions rather than the pipe.
