1) Will the Nibco U45BC-V true union ball check valve connect to both socket and threaded PVC pipe?
Both, on the same valve. The U45BC-V ships with universal ends, meaning each end block accepts either a solvent weld socket or a female NPT thread connection, so you can glue one side and thread the other without buying a different valve. That flexibility is the reason to spec the universal version when you are tying new Sch 80 pipe into an existing threaded manifold.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco U45BC-V ball check valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Order by part number, MA801U6 for 1/2 inch, MA801U8 for 3/4, MA801UA for 1 inch, MA801UB for 1-1/4, MA801UC for 1-1/2 and MA801UD for 2 inch. All are PVC Schedule 80, so they match Sch 80 pipe of the same nominal size.
3) Can I service a U45BC-V check valve without cutting the pipe out?
That is the whole point of the true union body. The two end blocks unthread from the center section, so the valve and its internal ball and seat lift straight out of the line for cleaning or replacement while the glued end connections stay bonded to the pipe. On a recirculation or chemical feed line that gets fouled, that turns a pipe-cutting job into a hand-tightened union break.
4) What is the pressure and temperature limit on a Nibco U45BC-V PVC check valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F, water, non-shock, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. PVC loses pressure capacity as temperature climbs, so a line running near 140 F is not a 150 psi line. If your system runs hot water or steam condensate, this is the wrong material entirely.
5) Can I use the U45BC-V ball check valve on a compressed air line?
No. Do not use or test this valve with compressed air or any other gas. That covers pressure testing too, so air-testing the line with the valve installed is off limits. It is a liquid service valve, rated for water and the chemical service PVC handles.
6) Is the FKM version of the Nibco U45BC-V better for chemical service than EPDM?
The V suffix on U45BC-V means FKM fluoroelastomer seats and O-rings. FKM is the seal to choose for acids, hydrocarbons and oxidizers, where EPDM degrades. Flip that around for one important case: FKM is a poor match for POE and some other synthetic oils, and Nibco publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering exactly that. Confirm the chemical you are pumping against a compatibility chart before committing.
7) Is the Nibco U45BC-V approved for potable water systems?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it meets ASTM F1970. It is also listed as lead-free. Those are the listings a plumbing inspector or an institutional facility spec asks for on a drinking water line, so it clears potable service in commercial plumbing as well as industrial and irrigation.
8) Should I use a ball check valve or a swing check on a PVC chemical line?
A ball check like the U45BC-V uses a free floating ball that seats against flow reversal, with no hinge pin or external shaft to corrode or seize. That is what makes it the common pick on chemical feed, irrigation and industrial water lines where a swing check's pivot hardware becomes the failure point. The tradeoff is orientation: a ball check depends on the ball returning to its seat, so it needs to be installed per the flow arrow and in the orientation the valve is built for, not dropped into any random run.
9) Do I need to buy adapters or extra fittings with a U45BC-V true union check valve?
No adapters needed for either connection style. Both end blocks come with the valve and take socket or female NPT, so a 1 inch MA801UA drops onto 1 inch Sch 80 pipe glued or threaded with nothing else on the order. What you will still want on hand is solvent cement and primer rated for Sch 80 if you are gluing, and thread sealant suited to plastic threads if you are threading.
10) Is a PVC ball check valve strong enough for an industrial line, or should I use metal?
PVC Schedule 80 carries the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it outlasts metal on corrosive service. The limits that decide it are thermal and mechanical, not chemical: 140 F maximum service temperature, 150 psi at 73 F, and no gas service. Above those, go metal.
11) Will a Nibco U45BC-V match the other grey PVC valves already in my system?
It is dark grey PVC, the standard color for Schedule 80, so it visually matches Sch 80 pipe and fittings already in the run. White PVC in a system is normally Schedule 40, which is a thinner wall and a lower pressure rating. If your existing line is white, check what schedule it actually is before adding a Sch 80 valve to it.
