1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S45BC-V PVC ball check valve come in?
Two sizes, 3 inch and 4 inch. The 3 inch is MPN MA801AF and the 4 inch is MA801AH. Both are socket-end PVC Schedule 80 true union ball check valves.
2) How do the ends connect on the S45BC-V check valve, do I need threaded pipe?
No threads. The S45BC-V uses S socket end connections, so the valve is solvent welded onto PVC pipe of the matching size. If your run is threaded, you will need to transition with a fitting or choose a threaded-end check valve instead.
3) What is the pressure and temperature limit on this Chemtrol PVC ball check valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F with water, non-shock, and a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. Pressure rating falls off as temperature climbs, so hot process lines near that ceiling need a different material. Also, never use or test it with compressed air or other gases.
4) Can I service this check valve without cutting the pipe out?
That is the point of the true union body. The Chemtrol true union design lets the valve and its internal components be lifted out of the piping system for repair or replacement, so the socket-welded tailpieces stay bonded in the line. On a 3 or 4 inch Schedule 80 run, that is the difference between a union nut and a saw.
5) Can this PVC check valve be used on potable water?
It is listed to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and meets ASTM F1970. The valve is flagged lead-free and is used in commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation systems.
6) Is the FKM seal the right choice, or should I be looking at EPDM?
The S45BC-V carries an FKM fluoroelastomer seat seal and O-ring. FKM is the selection for aggressive chemical and oxidizer service where EPDM would swell or break down. If your media is a chemical with known elastomer incompatibility, check the fluid against the seal before committing. Nibco also publishes a POE warning on plastics incompatibility that applies to these valves.
7) What is the difference between a ball check and a swing check for a PVC line?
The S45BC-V is a ball check: a free-floating ball seats against backflow and lifts off with forward flow, with no hinge pin or external lever to wear. There is nothing to adjust and no spring. Ball checks are normally installed in vertical upflow or horizontal runs per the manufacturer's data sheet, so confirm the orientation for your line before you glue it in.
8) Will a PVC Schedule 80 valve hold up in a corrosive industrial line?
PVC Schedule 80 is chosen for exactly that. It resists corrosion and carries the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastic piping materials. The body will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and there is no packing to maintain. The limits are heat and gas service, not chemistry.
9) Will this valve match the other Chemtrol PVC valves already in my plant?
The S45BC-V is dark grey PVC, the standard Chemtrol Schedule 80 body color, so it visually matches the rest of a grey PVC Sch 80 system. Sizing matches nominal 3 and 4 inch Schedule 80 socket pipe.
