1) What are the pressure and temperature limits on the Nibco Chemtrol F45BC-V?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. Pressure capacity drops as temperature climbs toward that 140 degree ceiling, so size the system on the temperature it actually runs at, not the 73 degree figure.
2) Can I use this PVC check valve on a compressed air line?
No. Chemtrol PVC valves must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pneumatic pressure testing, which has to be done hydrostatically instead. This valve is for liquid service only.
3) Do I have to cut the pipe out to service this check valve?
No. The Chemtrol True Union design lets the valve body and internal components be lifted out of the line for repair or ball replacement while the flanged connections stay bolted in place. That is the main reason to spend on a true union body over a fixed one on a line you expect to maintain.
4) Is this Nibco check valve approved for potable water?
The F45BC-V is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also meets ASTM F1970. It is flagged lead-free, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable line. System uses listed include commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation.
5) Why choose an FKM seal version instead of EPDM on a PVC check valve?
The F45BC-V uses an FKM fluoroelastomer seat seal and an FKM O-ring. FKM is the choice for aggressive chemicals, acids and hydrocarbon-bearing media where EPDM would swell or break down. If the line carries hot water or certain polar solvents, EPDM is the usual alternative, so match the elastomer to the chemical, not just the pipe material.
6) Does a ball check valve need to be installed a certain way, and how does it differ from a swing check?
A ball check relies on a free-floating ball that seats against reverse flow. Unlike a swing check, it tolerates vertical upward flow well, but it must be mounted with flow in the marked direction and, in horizontal runs, oriented so the ball returns to seat. Ball checks are common on chemical feed and irrigation lines because there is no hinge pin or spring to corrode. Confirm the arrow on the body at install.
7) Will Schedule 80 PVC hold up in a corrosive chemical line?
PVC Schedule 80 has strong corrosion resistance and the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it gets specified for chemical feed and wastewater work over metal. One caution: check the POE plastics incompatibility warning before running polyol ester or similar refrigeration oils through plastic valves.
