Nibco MB817UA – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco U51BC-E ball check valve solvent weld or thread onto CPVC pipe?
Either one. The U51BC-E ships with universal end connectors, meaning both socket (solvent weld) and female NPT threaded ends are included in the box, so you pick the connection at install. That is useful when one side of the run is glued pipe and the other side lands on a threaded fitting or pump port.
2) What is the pressure and temperature rating on this CPVC ball check valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F with water, non-shock, and a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. Note the pressure rating is stated at 73 degrees F, so a hot line will derate it. Liquid service only, Nibco warns against using or testing it with compressed air or other gases.
3) Can I service this check valve without cutting the pipe?
That is the point of the true union body. The Chemtrol design lets you back off both union nuts and lift the valve and its internals out of the piping for cleaning, ball replacement or O-ring replacement, then drop it back in. On a glued CPVC system that saves cutting and re-welding the line every time the check fouls.
4) Is the U51BC-E approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings and is flagged lead-free, and it also meets ASTM F1970. Those are the listings inspectors look for on a potable plumbing valve. It is also used on industrial process and irrigation lines.
5) Should I pick EPDM or Viton seals for my chemical line?
The U51BC-E is the EPDM-sealed version, with EPDM O-rings and EPDM seat seal. EPDM handles water, dilute acids and bases well but is not the right elastomer for petroleum oils or hydrocarbons. If your fluid is oil based, this is the wrong seal material and you want a fluoroelastomer seal instead. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE and similar oils that is worth reading before you commit.
6) What pipe sizes does the Chemtrol U51BC-E true union ball check valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Part numbers run MB817U6 for the 1/2 inch up through MB817UD for the 2 inch. All are Schedule 80 Corzan CPVC.
7) Does a ball check valve need to be installed vertically?
A ball check relies on a free floating ball seating against the seat to stop reverse flow, so orientation and flow direction both matter. Install it with the flow arrow on the body pointed downstream and follow the mounting orientation in the Chemtrol technical data sheet and valve selection guide, which Nibco directs you to for engineering and installation detail on this valve.
8) Will this CPVC valve hold up in a corrosive or buried line better than metal?
Corzan CPVC will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it gets specified on chemical feed, wastewater and irrigation runs where bronze or iron fails. Nibco also calls out strong mechanical performance across a broad temperature range and underground service. The body is light grey Schedule 80.
9) Do I need to buy adapters or extra fittings to install the U51BC-E?
No adapters needed for a standard Schedule 80 CPVC tie-in. Both socket and female NPT end connectors come with the valve, so a 1 inch MB817UA lands on either 1 inch CPVC pipe or a 1 inch male NPT nipple without additional parts. You supply solvent cement and primer for the socket side, or thread sealant rated for plastic on the threaded side.
