1) Will the Nibco S51BC-E ball check valve solvent weld onto Schedule 80 CPVC pipe?
Yes. The S51BC-E has socket ends for solvent weld joining, and it is a Schedule 80 CPVC body, so it cements directly onto Sch 80 CPVC pipe of the matching size. It comes in 3 inch and 4 inch. There is no threading involved, so plan for cement cure time before pressure testing.
2) What pressure and temperature can this Chemtrol CPVC ball check valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, with a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. As with all thermoplastic valves, the working pressure falls off as temperature climbs, so a line running near 210 F is nowhere near the 150 psi figure. Never use or test the valve with compressed air or other gases.
3) Can I service this check valve without cutting the CPVC pipe out?
That is the point of the True Union design. The body unthreads from the two union nuts so the valve and its internals lift out of the line, letting you replace the ball or the EPDM O-rings and reinstall without cutting the solvent welded socket ends off the pipe. On a 3 or 4 inch line that saves a substantial repair.
4) Is this valve approved for potable water on a commercial job?
The S51BC-E is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also carries ASTM F1970. It is listed as a lead-free application product, which is what an inspector looks for on potable service. System uses include commercial plumbing, industrial, and irrigation.
5) Are the EPDM seals compatible with my chemical feed line?
The seat seal and O-rings on the S51BC-E are EPDM rubber. EPDM suits water, most dilute acids and bases, and glycol, but it is not the seal for petroleum oils or many hydrocarbons, where Viton is the usual alternative elastomer. Nibco also publishes a plastics incompatibility warning covering POE (polyol ester) fluids, which should not be run in CPVC. Check your fluid against the elastomer before you cement it in.
6) Ball check or swing check for a vertical CPVC riser?
A ball check like the S51BC-E relies on a free ball seating against the EPDM seat, so it handles vertical upflow well and reseats quickly on flow reversal, with no hinge pin or external lever to wear. Swing checks are generally horizontal-preferred and have more internal linkage. If you want a plastic check you can rebuild in place, the ball check plus True Union body is the simpler choice.
7) Why CPVC instead of PVC for this check valve?
Corzan CPVC carries a higher temperature ceiling than PVC, which is why this valve is rated to 210 degrees F max service. It holds mechanical strength across a broad temperature range, performs well buried, and will not rust, scale, pit, or corrode. If your line never sees warm water, PVC is the cheaper material; if it does, CPVC is the reason to specify this one.
