Nibco MB611AF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S51TB-E Tru-Bloc true union ball valve come in?
The S51TB-E is offered in 3 inch, 4 inch and 6 inch. Part numbers run MB611AF for 3 inch, MB611AH for 4 inch and MB611AK for 6 inch. All three are full port, so the bore matches the nominal pipe size and you are not throttling flow through the valve.
2) How does the S51TB-E connect to the pipe, and do I need glue or threads?
Socket ends, solvent weld. You cut and prime the CPVC pipe and cement it into the socket, same as any Schedule 80 CPVC fitting. There are no threads on the ends, so if your run is threaded you will need a transition adapter ahead of the valve.
3) Can I service this valve without cutting it out of the line?
That is the point of the true union design. The valve body and its working parts lift straight out of the piping between the two union nuts, so the seats, ball and O-rings can be replaced or the whole valve swapped without disturbing the solvent welded socket ends. Tru-Bloc adds a self-adjusting energizer O-ring so the seal takes up wear on its own.
4) What pressure and temperature can this CPVC ball valve handle?
150 psi at 73 F on water, non-shock, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 F. Note the derating that applies to all thermoplastics: the 150 psi figure is at 73 F, and working pressure falls as you approach the 210 F ceiling, so size your system pressure against the actual operating temperature.
5) Is this valve safe to use on a compressed air line?
No. Chemtrol states plainly not to use or test this valve with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the line. Use water or another liquid medium for testing, and pick a valve rated for gas service if air is the actual application.
6) Can I use the S51TB-E on a potable water system?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and carries a lead-free application listing, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on potable service. It also holds ASTM F1970 for thermoplastic valves in pressure applications.
7) Are the seals EPDM or Viton, and does that matter for my chemical?
The E suffix on S51TB-E means EPDM. Both the seat seals and the O-rings are EPDM rubber, which is the usual choice for water, dilute acids and bases, but it is the wrong elastomer for petroleum oils and many solvents. If your media is hydrocarbon based, check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide before committing to EPDM.
8) Why choose Corzan CPVC over standard PVC for this valve?
Corzan CPVC carries a higher temperature ceiling than PVC, and this valve is good to 210 F service. It also will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it holds up underground. For a hot chemical line or a heated process loop, that temperature headroom is the reason to spend on CPVC instead of PVC.
9) Is this valve suitable for an irrigation main or is it strictly industrial?
Both. The listed system uses cover commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation. For a buried irrigation main the CPVC body is rated for underground performance, and the true union lets a maintenance crew pull the valve from a box without recutting pipe.
