1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T51BC-E true union ball check valve come in?
The T51BC-E ball check valve is made in 3 inch (MPN MB818AF) and 4 inch (MPN MB818AH). Both are Schedule 80 CPVC with female NPT threaded ends, so they thread onto matching 3 inch or 4 inch male threaded pipe or nipples.
2) How does the T51BC-E connect to the pipe - is it solvent welded or threaded?
Threaded, not solvent cemented. Both ends are female NPT, so you thread in male adapters or nipples. If your run is socket CPVC, you will need male adapters at each end. The true union body means the valve can be lifted out of the line for service without cutting pipe.
3) What pressure and temperature can this CPVC ball check valve handle?
150 psi at 73 F with water, non-shock, and a maximum service temperature of 210 F. As with all thermoplastic valves, pressure rating drops as temperature climbs, so a line running near the top of that range should not be sized to the 150 psi figure.
4) Can I use the T51BC-E on a compressed air line?
No. The valve is not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. It is a liquid service valve only, and that includes pressure testing - hydrostatic test only. Use metal or an air-rated valve for pneumatic service.
5) Is this CPVC check valve approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, plus ASTM F1970, and is listed as lead-free. That is the standard package a plumbing inspector looks for on potable water plastic valves.
6) Will EPDM seals work with my chemical?
The T51BC-E uses EPDM O-rings and an EPDM seat seal. EPDM handles water, dilute acids and bases, and hypochlorite well, but it is not the choice for petroleum oils, hydrocarbons or POE-type lubricants. Nibco publishes a POE warning on plastics incompatibility for exactly that reason. If the line carries oils, specify a Viton seal version instead.
7) What is the difference between a ball check valve and a swing check for CPVC piping?
The T51BC-E is a ball-check: a free floating ball seats against the EPDM seal to stop reverse flow, with no hinge pin or external lever. That makes it tolerant of dirty or scaling fluids and it seats in any position the ball can return under gravity or back pressure. A swing check relies on a hinged disc, which needs horizontal mounting in most cases. For chemical feed, irrigation and industrial CPVC lines, the ball check is the simpler maintenance item.
8) Can the valve be serviced without cutting it out of the line?
Yes, that is the point of the true union body. Back off the two union nuts and the valve and its internal components lift out of the piping for repair or ball and seal replacement, leaving the threaded end connectors in place on the pipe.
9) Is Corzan CPVC the same as regular PVC for an industrial line?
No. Corzan CPVC carries a higher temperature ceiling than standard PVC and holds mechanical strength across a broader temperature range, which is why this valve is rated to 210 F service. It will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, so it suits chemical, industrial and irrigation service as well as commercial plumbing. If your system is PVC, check the temperature and chemical duty before substituting a PVC valve into the same spot.
10) What color is the valve body, and will it match my existing CPVC valves?
Light grey, which is the usual Chemtrol Schedule 80 CPVC body color, so it sits in alongside other grey Sch 80 CPVC fittings and valves on the same run.
