All inner surfaces of the Tru-Bloc® bleach ball valve are kept constantly wetted and vented to the upstream side when the valve is in the closed position, eliminating the conditions required for gas accumulation and caustic crystallization in the body cavity. The Tru-Bloc® valve is engineered with a self-adjusting seat and upstream and downstream blocking capability to stop flow when an alternate union is removed for servicing the piping system. The valve can be easily joined with the flanged end connections. Please refer to Chemtrol technical data sheets, valve selection guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. PVC Schedule 80 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance properties and has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of any other major thermoplastic material used for piping systems. Chemtrol PVC valves are lightweight, easy to install, maintenance-free, and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode. Choose Chemtrol® valves for the most reliable, versatile and economical valve option in commercial and industrial applications. Chemtrol® valves are backed by a 1-year limited warranty. Because Chemtrol® is a NIBCO brand the flow-control valves are unsurpassed in quality, performance and longevity.

Nibco MA604AF – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Why use a vented bleach ball valve instead of a standard PVC true union ball valve on a sodium hypochlorite line?
Sodium hypochlorite off-gasses, and in a standard ball valve that gas collects in the body cavity behind the ball, building pressure and forming caustic crystals that can lock the valve or blow it apart. The Nibco Chemtrol F45TB-V-BBV bleach valve uses a vented ball so the cavity stays wetted and vents back to the upstream side when the valve is closed, so gas never accumulates. On a bleach feed line that is the difference between a valve that keeps working and one that seizes.
2) What size PVC lines does the Nibco F45TB-V-BBV bleach valve cover?
Three sizes: 3 inch, 4 inch, and 6 inch, ordered as MA604AF, MA604AH and MA604AK respectively. All are full port, so the bore matches the nominal pipe size and there is no throttling of the feed.
3) What pressure is this PVC bleach valve rated for?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on non-shock water service, full port. That rating drops as fluid temperature rises, which is normal for PVC. One hard limit: do not use or test this valve with compressed air or other gases, hydrostatic testing only.
4) Can I service a downstream union without draining the whole bleach line?
That is what the Tru-Bloc design is for. The valve has a self-adjusting seat plus upstream and downstream blocking capability, so it holds back flow from either direction when an adjacent union is broken for service. Useful on a chemical feed skid where you want to pull a pump or a meter without shutting down the day tank.
5) Is this valve approved for potable water systems?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings and is built to ASTM F1970, and it is classified lead-free. Those are the listings municipal and institutional specs normally call for on chemical feed into potable systems, such as hypochlorite disinfection at a water plant.
6) Is FKM the right seal material for sodium hypochlorite, or should I be looking at EPDM?
This valve ships with FKM fluoroelastomer seats and O-rings, which is the seal Nibco specifies on the bleach configuration of the Tru-Bloc valve. If your process fluid is something other than hypochlorite, check the seal against that chemical before ordering, since elastomer choice is the usual failure point on chemical service, not the PVC body.
7) Is PVC Schedule 80 strong enough for an industrial chemical line, or should I be using metal?
Schedule 80 PVC has the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used for piping and will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is exactly why it beats metal on bleach and other corrosives. The trade-offs are the 150 psi at 73F ceiling and the ban on gas or compressed air service. For commercial plumbing, industrial process and irrigation duty within those limits, the Schedule 80 body is the practical choice.
8) Why is the handle orange on this Nibco valve?
The orange handle is the visual flag for bleach service on an otherwise dark grey PVC valve body. On a plant floor with a dozen similar looking Schedule 80 valves, it tells an operator at a glance which line is hypochlorite and which is water. Worth keeping consistent if you are standardizing a facility.
9) Do I need to worry about which plastics contact this valve in service?
Yes, and Nibco publishes a specific POE warning on plastics incompatibility that ships with the Chemtrol line. Certain thread sealants, lubricants and incompatible plastics or chemicals can stress-crack PVC. Review that warning along with the Chemtrol technical data sheets and valve selection guides before installing on a chemical feed system.
