All inner surfaces of the Tru-Bloc® bleach ball valve are kept constantly wetted and vented to the upstream side when the valve is in the closed position, eliminating the conditions required for gas accumulation and caustic crystallization in the body cavity. 1) Why use a Tru-Bloc bleach ball valve instead of a standard CPVC true union ball valve on a sodium hypochlorite line?
Bleach off-gasses, and in a standard ball valve the trapped body cavity lets gas collect and sodium hypochlorite crystallize around the ball, which is what seizes valves on chlorination skids. The Nibco F51TB-V-BBV uses a vented ball so all inner surfaces stay wetted and vented to the upstream side when the valve is closed, so there is no dead cavity for gas or caustic crystal buildup. If the line is not hypochlorite or another gassing chemical, a conventional true union ball valve will do the job.
2) Can I isolate and service a section of pipe with this valve without draining both sides?
Yes. The F51TB-V-BBV is built with a self-adjusting seat and both upstream and downstream blocking capability, so it stops flow when an adjacent union is broken for servicing the piping. That is the reason it is used as the isolation point on bleach feed systems where you have to pull a pump or a strainer without shutting the whole line down.
3) Will these flanges bolt up to my existing Class 150 flanges?
They will. The valve has flanged end connections drilled to match ANSI B16.5 Class 150 bolt patterns, so it mates with standard Class 150 metal or plastic companion flanges of the same nominal size. Use a full-face gasket and do not over-torque the bolts; this is a thermoplastic body, not cast iron.
4) What is the pressure rating on this CPVC bleach valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on non-shock water service, full port. That rating is at ambient temperature only. CPVC loses pressure capability as the fluid warms, so derate for hot service using the Chemtrol technical data before you spec it above room temperature.
5) Can I pressure test this valve with compressed air?
No. The manufacturer states plainly that the Tru-Bloc bleach valve must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. Hydrostatic test only. Testing a thermoplastic valve with air stores energy in the line and a failure is violent.
6) Are the seals on this valve compatible with sodium hypochlorite?
The seals are FKM fluoroelastomer (Viton type), which is the elastomer specified for this bleach service valve rather than EPDM. The body and ball are Corzan CPVC Schedule 80. If your chemical is one that attacks FKM, this is the wrong seal material and you want an EPDM-sealed valve instead.
7) Is this valve approved for potable water systems?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and carries ASTM F1970. It is also listed as a lead-free application item, which is what specifying engineers on municipal and commercial potable systems are looking for.
8) What pipe sizes does the Nibco bleach ball valve come in?

Schedule 80. The F51TB-V-BBV is a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 valve, which is the heavier wall series used on industrial and chemical piping. Since the ends are Class 150 flanged rather than socket, the valve will tie into either schedule of pipe as long as you are using matching Class 150 companion flanges.
10) How do I tell this bleach valve apart from the other CPVC ball valves on the rack?
By the handle. The Tru-Bloc bleach valve ships with an orange handle on a light grey Corzan CPVC body, which is how plant maintenance crews spot the hypochlorite service valves at a glance. Standard CPVC ball valves in the same family do not use the orange handle.
11) Where is this Nibco Chemtrol valve typically used?
