All inner surfaces of the Tru-Bloc® bleach valve are kept constantly wetted and vented to the upstream side when the valve is in the closed position, eliminating the conditions required for gas accumulation and caustic crystallization in the body cavity. The Tru-Bloc® valve is engineered with a self-adjusting seat and upstream and downstream blocking capability to stop flow when an alternate union is removed for servicing the piping system. 1) What makes the Nibco S45TB-V-BBV a bleach valve instead of a standard PVC ball valve?
It is the vented ball plus the Tru-Bloc design. When the valve is closed, all inner surfaces stay wetted and the body cavity is vented back to the upstream side, so the gas buildup and caustic crystallization that sodium hypochlorite causes inside a sealed ball cavity never gets the chance to form. A standard PVC ball valve traps liquid in that cavity, which is exactly where bleach off-gasses and crystallizes.
2) Can I service one side of the line without draining the whole system with this Chemtrol true union valve?
Yes. The Tru-Bloc design has a self-adjusting seat with upstream and downstream blocking, so the valve holds back flow when the alternate union nut is broken loose to service piping. That is what separates it from a plain true union ball valve, where removing a union on the sealed side can let the line drain.
3) What pressure is this PVC bleach valve rated for?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on non-shock water service, full port. Rating drops as fluid temperature rises, which is normal for PVC. Do not use or test it with compressed air or any other gas.

6) How do the ends connect - is this solvent weld or threaded?
Socket weld only. The S ends are solvent cement sockets sized for PVC Schedule 80 pipe, so you cement the union tailpieces to the pipe and then thread the union nuts onto the valve body. There is no threaded (T) end option in this configuration.
7) Is the FKM seal the right elastomer for sodium hypochlorite?
The valve ships with FKM fluoroelastomer seats and O-rings, which is the seal material Chemtrol specifies on the bleach configuration of this valve. EPDM versions of the same body are built for other chemical services, so if you are dosing hypochlorite, the FKM build is the one to order.
8) Will a full port valve keep my flow rate up on a chemical feed line?
Yes, the bore matches the nominal pipe size, so a 3, 4 or 6 inch valve passes full line flow with no restriction at the valve. That matters on gravity or low-head hypochlorite feed where a reduced port would throttle the line.
9) How do I tell the bleach valve apart from the other grey Chemtrol valves on the rack?
By the handle. The body is dark grey PVC like the rest of the Chemtrol Schedule 80 line, but the bleach service valve carries an orange handle. Useful when a plant has both standard and vented-ball true union valves in the same room.
