1) How does this Chemtrol valve connect to the pipe, and do I need threaded adapters?
Socket connections, so it solvent cements directly to PVC Schedule 80 pipe. No threaded adapters and no gaskets at the pipe joint. The end connection is an S socket, which takes the pipe OD inside the hub and is bonded with primer and solvent cement. If your system is threaded, you would need a threaded-end version rather than this one.
2) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco S45TB-V PVC ball valve?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, full port. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. PVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so a system running near the 140 degree ceiling should not be sized against the full 150 psi figure.
3) Can I use this PVC ball valve on a compressed air line?
No. The S45TB-V is not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the line, hydrostatic test only. PVC failing under stored gas energy shatters rather than splits, which is why the restriction is absolute. For air service you need a valve rated for gas.
4) Is the FKM seal the right choice for my chemical, or should I use EPDM?
The S45TB-V uses FKM fluoroelastomer for the seat seal and O-ring. FKM is the option chosen for aggressive chemical and oxidizer service where EPDM would swell or break down, but it is a poor match for some ketones and hot water applications where EPDM is preferred. Nibco publishes Chemtrol chemical resistance guides and technical data sheets for the specific media, and they should decide the elastomer before the valve is ordered.
5) Will this valve restrict flow in a 4 inch line?
No, it is a full port ball valve, so the bore through the ball matches the nominal pipe size and the pressure drop across an open valve is minimal. That matters on irrigation mains and industrial process lines where a reduced port would cost head.
6) Is this valve suitable for an irrigation main or an industrial process line?
Both. The S45TB-V is listed for commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service, plus lead-free applications. PVC Schedule 80 will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it gets specified on buried irrigation and on chemical feed lines where metal valves fail. The limits to check against your system are 150 psi at 73 degrees F and 140 degrees F maximum temperature.
7) What does the Chemtrol S45TB-V look like once installed, and how do I tell it apart from the EPDM version on a shelf?
