1) What sizes does the Nibco T45TB-V true union ball valve come in?
The T45TB-V is offered in 3 inch and 4 inch pipe sizes. The 3 inch is MPN MA598AF and the 4 inch is MA598AH. Both are PVC Schedule 80 with female NPT threaded ends.
2) How does the T45TB-V connect to my piping, threaded or solvent weld?
Threaded. The T45TB-V has female NPT thread connections on both ends, so it screws onto male-threaded PVC or metal pipe nipples. If your system is solvent-cemented Schedule 80 PVC, you either need threaded adapters at the valve or a socket-end version of the valve instead.
3) What is the pressure and temperature limit on this Chemtrol PVC ball valve?
150 psi at 73 F on non-shock water service, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 140 F. PVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so anything hot-water or steam adjacent is outside this valve's range.
4) Can I use this PVC valve on a compressed air line?
No. The T45TB-V is not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. It is a liquid-service valve, and pneumatic testing of thermoplastic valves is expressly ruled out. Hydrostatic test only.
5) Is the FKM seal the right choice, or should I be looking at EPDM for my chemical?
The T45TB-V uses FKM fluoroelastomer for the seat and seals, which is the usual pick for aggressive acids, oxidizers and many hydrocarbons. EPDM is the alternative when the media is something FKM does not tolerate. Check the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide against your specific media before committing, since the elastomer is what decides service life here, not the PVC body.
6) Is this valve approved for potable water?
The T45TB-V is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it also meets ASTM F1970. It is listed as a lead-free application product, so it suits commercial potable plumbing as well as industrial and irrigation service.
7) Can I service this valve without cutting it out of the line?
That is the point of the true union design. The valve and its operating components lift out of the piping system for repair or replacement once the union nuts are backed off, so the pipe stays in place. The Tru-Bloc feature adds a self-adjusting energizer O-ring to the arrangement.
8) Is the T45TB-V full port, and will it restrict flow in a 4 inch line?
Full port. The bore matches the nominal pipe size, so a 4 inch valve passes a 4 inch line without the flow penalty a reduced-port ball valve adds. Useful where you are metering irrigation or pumping viscous process fluid and cannot give up head.
9) Will PVC hold up better than metal in a corrosive process line?
For corrosive liquid service, yes. PVC Schedule 80 will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, and it carries the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used in piping. It is also light, which matters when you are hanging a 4 inch valve off a rack. The tradeoff is the 140 F temperature ceiling and no gas service.
