1) Does the Nibco U45TB-V true union ball valve take socket or threaded pipe?
Both. The U45TB-V ships with universal end connections, meaning each end carries both a socket and a female NPT threaded connection, so you can solvent weld one side and thread the other on the same valve. That is what lets a single part number cover a tank nipple on one side and a Sch 80 pipe run on the other without ordering an adapter.
2) Can I use this PVC ball valve on a hot water line?
No. Maximum service temperature on the U45TB-V is 140 degrees F, and the 250 psi pressure rating is stated at 73 degrees F with non-shock water. Domestic hot water and anything steam or process heat is outside it. Pressure capacity falls as temperature climbs toward that 140 degree ceiling, so size your system pressure against the operating temperature, not the 73 degree number.
3) Do I have to cut the valve out of the line to rebuild it?
No. The Chemtrol true union body lets the valve and its internal components be lifted out of the piping system for repair or replacement while the unions stay solvent welded to the pipe. Tru-Bloc adds a self-adjusting energizer O-ring, so the seat load keeps itself set rather than needing you to chase the union nut as the seats wear. For a plant or irrigation main where cutting out a valve means draining a system, that is the reason to pay for a true union body instead of a solvent socket valve.
4) What is the difference between the FKM and EPDM seal versions of this Chemtrol valve?
The U45TB-V is the FKM (fluoroelastomer) build, in both the seat seals and the O-ring. FKM is the elastomer you specify for acids, hydrocarbons and oxidizers; EPDM is the one specified for other chemical families. The elastomer is the spec that decides whether the valve survives the fluid, so check your chemical against the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide before you settle on FKM over EPDM. The V in the model number is the marker for the FKM build.
5) Is the Nibco U45TB-V approved for potable water?
Yes. It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and meets ASTM F1970 for thermoplastic valves. It is also classed lead-free, which is what a municipal or institutional inspector will want on a potable line.
6) What pipe sizes does the Chemtrol Tru-Bloc PVC ball valve come in?
Six sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Order by size, MA930U6 for 1/2 inch through MA930UD for 2 inch. All are full port, so the bore matches the nominal pipe size and you do not lose flow across the valve.
7) Will a Schedule 80 PVC ball valve hold up in a corrosive process line?
PVC Schedule 80 is the body material here, and it does not rust, scale, pit or corrode, which is why it gets specified for chemical feed, plating and wastewater work where a bronze or iron valve would be eaten. It carries the highest long term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used in piping. The limits are temperature (140 degrees F) and chemical compatibility with the fluid, not corrosion in the metallic sense.
8) Can I put this valve on a Schedule 40 PVC irrigation line?
Yes. Sch 40 and Sch 80 PVC share the same outside diameters at a given nominal size, so a Sch 80 socket takes Sch 40 pipe and a female NPT end takes any NPT male thread regardless of schedule. The Chemtrol true union valve is listed for irrigation service along with commercial plumbing and industrial. The difference is wall thickness and pressure rating, not fit.
9) Is there anything I should not run through a PVC valve besides gases?
Polyol ester (POE) lubricants, used in some refrigeration and compressor systems, are incompatible with PVC and Nibco publishes a specific plastics incompatibility warning about them. Beyond that, the governing document is the Chemtrol chemical resistance guide, which you match against your actual fluid and concentration before committing to FKM seats.
10) Do I need to support or brace a PVC true union ball valve?
The valve itself is lightweight compared with a bronze or iron equivalent, which is part of why PVC gets used on long horizontal runs, but the union nuts are the point to watch. Do not use the valve as the tie point that pulls misaligned pipe together, and do not overtighten the union nuts with a wrench. Chemtrol publishes technical data sheets and installation literature for the joint details and for solvent weld cure times before pressurizing.
11) What color is the Chemtrol Tru-Bloc valve and can I use it to mark a line?
