1) Does the Nibco U51TB-V CPVC ball valve come with socket ends or threaded ends?
Both. The U51TB-V is a universal end valve, so each end carrier accepts a Schedule 80 socket solvent weld connection or a female NPT thread. You do not pick one at order time, the valve ships with both connection styles so you can solvent weld one side and thread the other if the run calls for it.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco U51TB-V Tru-Bloc true union ball valve come in?
Six sizes, 1/2 inch through 2 inch: 1/2 (MB930U6), 3/4 (MB930U8), 1 (MB930UA), 1-1/4 (MB930UB), 1-1/2 (MB930UC) and 2 inch (MB930UD). All are full port, so the bore matches the nominal pipe size and you do not lose flow across the valve.
3) Can I service a Chemtrol Tru-Bloc true union ball valve without cutting the pipe out?
That is the point of the true union body. Back off the two union nuts and the ball, stem and seats lift out of the line for repair or replacement while the end connectors stay solvent welded to the pipe. The Tru-Bloc design adds a self-adjusting energizer O-ring, so the seat load resets itself rather than needing a seat adjustment after reassembly. Worth knowing before you design the run: leave enough clearance at each union nut to get a strap wrench on it.
4) What pressure and temperature can a Corzan CPVC Schedule 80 ball valve handle?
250 psi water non-shock at 73 degrees F, full port, with a maximum service temperature of 210 degrees F. Like all thermoplastic valves the pressure rating falls off as the fluid gets hotter, so size the duty at the actual operating temperature, not at the 73 degree number.
5) Can I use a CPVC ball valve on a compressed air line?
No. The U51TB-V is rated for liquid service only, and Nibco states plainly that it must not be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing the line with air. A failed thermoplastic valve on a gas charge fails violently. For air service you need a metal valve.
6) Is the Nibco U51TB-V CPVC ball valve approved for potable water?
It is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61, and it is a lead-free valve, which is what a plumbing inspector looks for on a potable line. It also meets ASTM F1970 for thermoplastic valves in pressure applications. Listed system uses are commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation.
7) Should I order the FKM seal version of the Chemtrol ball valve or the EPDM one?
The U51TB-V carries FKM fluoroelastomer seats and an FKM O-ring. FKM is the seal you want for aggressive chemical duty, acids and hydrocarbon-bearing streams. EPDM is the alternative for water and general plumbing service and it handles some chemistries FKM does not, so the choice is driven entirely by what is in the pipe. Check the Chemtrol chemical resistance data for your specific media before committing, because an elastomer mismatch is the usual reason a plastic valve leaks early.
8) Will a Corzan CPVC valve work on a PVC Schedule 80 line?
Yes, dimensionally. CPVC and PVC Schedule 80 share the same pipe and socket dimensions, so the U51TB-V solvent welds into a Schedule 80 PVC line or threads to Schedule 80 NPT. Use the correct CPVC solvent cement at the socket joints. What CPVC buys you over PVC is temperature, this valve runs to 210 degrees F where standard PVC tops out well below that.
9) Do I need pipe supports or thread sealant special to a plastic ball valve like this one?
CPVC is light enough that the valve itself needs no dedicated support the way a bronze or iron valve does, and it will not rust, scale, pit or corrode, so there is no maintenance schedule on the body. On the threaded side use a thread sealant rated for plastic and hand tighten plus a controlled turn, over-torquing an NPT thread is what splits a plastic end connector. On the socket side, CPVC solvent cement only.
10) What color is the Nibco U51TB-V valve body, and does the orange handle mean anything?
