1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T45TB-E true union ball valve come in?
The T45TB-E is offered in 3 inch and 4 inch. The 3 inch is MPN MA610AF and the 4 inch is MA610AH. Both are full port, so the bore matches the nominal pipe size and you don't lose flow across the valve.
2) How does the T45TB-E connect to my piping, threaded or solvent weld?
Threaded. The T45TB-E uses female NPT thread connections on both ends, so it screws onto male threaded PVC Schedule 80 pipe or nipples. If your run is solvent cemented, you either need threaded adapters at the valve or a socket-end version of the Chemtrol true union valve instead.
3) What pressure and temperature can this PVC ball valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F on water, non-shock, in the full port configuration, with a maximum service temperature of 140 degrees F. PVC loses pressure capability as temperature climbs, so hot process lines are out of scope for this valve.
4) Can I use this valve on a compressed air line?
No. The Chemtrol T45TB-E is explicitly not to be used or tested with compressed air or other gases. It is a liquid service valve. Pressure testing it with air is also prohibited, so hydrostatic testing only.
5) Is the T45TB-E approved for potable water?
It carries NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 listings and is classified as a lead-free application product, which is what a potable water spec normally calls for. It is also used in commercial plumbing, industrial and irrigation service.
6) Can I service this valve without cutting the pipe out?
That is the point of the true union body. The original Chemtrol True Union design lets the valve and its operating components be lifted out of the piping system for repair or replacement, so you back off the union nuts rather than cutting. The Tru-Bloc version adds a self-adjusting energizer O-ring to the design.
7) Will EPDM seals work with my chemical, or do I need Viton?
The T45TB-E uses EPDM O-rings and EPDM rubber seats. EPDM suits water, many dilute acids and bases, but it is not the right elastomer for petroleum oils and some solvents. Nibco publishes a warning on plastics incompatibility with POE (polyol ester) fluids, and directs users to the Chemtrol chemical resistance guides before selecting. If your media is not EPDM compatible, specify the FKM/Viton seal version of the same true union valve.
8) Why choose Schedule 80 PVC over metal for a corrosive line?
PVC Schedule 80 has excellent corrosion resistance and the highest long-term hydrostatic strength of the major thermoplastics used in piping. Chemtrol PVC valves are light, easy to install, essentially maintenance free, and won't rust, scale, pit or corrode. The trade-off against metal is the 140 degree F temperature ceiling and no gas service.
9) What does the T45TB-E look like installed, and will the handle be visible for shutoff identification?
The valve body is dark grey PVC with an orange handle, which makes it easy to pick out as a shutoff point in a grey PVC run. Handle position shows open or closed at a glance, standard quarter turn ball valve operation.
