1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S45TB-E true union ball valve come in?
The S45TB-E is offered in 3 inch and 4 inch. The 3 inch orders as MPN MA611AF and the 4 inch as MA611AH. Both are full port, so the bore matches the nominal line size and you don't lose flow through the valve.
2) How does the S45TB-E connect to PVC pipe - is it socket or threaded?
Socket only. The S45TB-E has S socket end connections, solvent welded to Schedule 80 PVC pipe. If your line is threaded, you either need a threaded-end version of the valve or threaded adapters solvent welded into the sockets.
3) What pressure and temperature can this PVC ball valve handle?
150 psi at 73 degrees F with water, non-shock, full port. Maximum service temperature is 140 degrees F. Like all PVC, the pressure rating drops as temperature climbs toward that 140 degree ceiling, so don't size it off the 150 psi figure for a hot line.
4) Can I use this Chemtrol PVC valve on a compressed air line?
No. The S45TB-E carries an explicit instruction not to use or test it with compressed air or other gases. That includes pressure testing - hydrostatic test only. Use a metal valve for air and gas service.
5) Do I have to cut the valve out of the line to service it?
No, and that's the point of the true union body. The original Chemtrol True Union design lets the valve and its operating components lift out of the piping system for repair or replacement without disturbing the solvent welded socket ends. Tru-Bloc adds a self-adjusting energizer O-ring on top of that. For a 3 or 4 inch line this is the difference between a seal replacement and a repipe.
6) What are the seals made of, and does the EPDM in the model name cover everything?
Not everything. The E in S45TB-E refers to the EPDM O-rings. The seat seal is FKM fluoroelastomer. Two different elastomers, so check both against your chemical resistance guide before you commit - a fluid that's fine on EPDM is not automatically fine on FKM.
7) Is this valve approved for potable water?
The S45TB-E is certified to NSF/ANSI Standard 14 and NSF/ANSI/CAN-61, and it also meets ASTM F1970. It is flagged lead-free. That combination is what a municipal or institutional inspector looks for on a potable line.
8) What kind of systems is this Nibco Chemtrol ball valve used on?
