1) Can I use the Nibco PC-585-70-66 press ball valve on potable drinking water lines?
No. Nibco states that use of this bronze press ball valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for non-potable service: commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, automatic sprinkler systems and residential plumbing lines that are not drinking water. For potable copper lines you need a valve carrying a lead-free listing.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco PC-585 press ball valve come in, and which handle comes with each?
Sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The standard metal lever versions are 1/2 in (NF84HC6), 3/4 in (NF84HC8), 1 in (NF84HCA), 1-1/2 in (NF84HCC) and 2 in (NF84HCD). The NIB-Seal insulated plastic lever versions are 1-1/4 in (NF84C5B), 1-1/2 in (NF84C5C) and 2 in (NF84C5D). Pick the insulated lever where the valve sits on chilled or hot lines that get insulated and you want the handle sealed through the jacket.
3) Do I need to solder this Nibco press ball valve, or what tool does it take?
No flame, solder or flux. Both ends are female press connections with an inboard bead and EPDM O-rings, so you cut and deburr the copper tube, mark depth, insert, and crimp with a press tool and the correct jaw or chain for the size. A correct crimp leaves a visible "N" witness mark on the fitting, and the press leak-detection feature will weep at test pressure if a joint was missed.
4) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco PC-585 bronze ball valve?
250 psi / 17.2 bar non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic heating and chilled water loops and standard domestic-pressure commercial risers, but it is not a steam valve.
5) Is this a full port ball valve, and does that matter for flow?
Full port. The ball bore matches the nominal line size, so a 2 inch valve passes essentially the same flow as 2 inch tube with negligible added restriction. That matters on pump suction, sprinkler risers and any branch where you cannot afford the pressure drop a standard-port valve adds.
6) Does this Nibco press valve meet MSS SP-110 for a ball valve spec callout?
It conforms to MSS SP-110, the standard covering bronze and brass ball valves for threaded, solder, solvent and press ends. If the drawing calls for an MSS SP-110 full port bronze ball valve at 250 psi CWP with stainless trim, this one answers that line.
7) What are the seats, stem and trim made of on the Nibco PC-585 press ball valve?
Bronze two-piece body with stainless steel trim and a stainless steel stem, reinforced PTFE seat rings, and EPDM O-rings at the press ends. The stem is blowout-proof and the body is dezincification resistant, which is why it holds up on glycol hydronic and industrial water service.
8) Why does the Nibco PC-585 have a vented ball, and can I still use it as a service shutoff?
Yes, it is a shutoff valve. The vented ball relieves pressure that would otherwise be trapped in the ball cavity when the valve is closed, which is what protects the valve on systems that see thermal expansion, such as heating and chilled water loops. It closes off the line normally in the closed position.
