Nibco NL951HD – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use the Nibco T-585-70-66 bronze ball valve on a potable water line?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014, so keep the T-585-70-66 off potable lines. It is built for commercial and light industrial service: HVAC, low pressure steam, compressed air, LP gas, natural gas and aggressive water. If the line feeds drinking water, you need a lead-free rated valve instead.
2) What size and thread does the Nibco T-585-70-66 ball valve take?
It is a 2 inch valve with female NPT (FIPT) threaded ends on both sides, so it screws onto standard 2 inch male NPT pipe or nipples. Threaded means it can be broken out later with a union, unlike a soldered valve.
3) Will a full port 2 inch bronze ball valve restrict flow in my line?
No. The T-585-70-66 is full port, meaning the ball bore matches the 2 inch pipe ID, so there is effectively no added restriction across the valve. That matters on pump suction, condenser water and gravity drain legs where you cannot afford pressure drop. A standard (reduced) port valve in the same size would neck the flow down.
4) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco T-585 bronze ball valve handle?
600 PSI (41.4 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 PSI (10.3 bar) saturated steam. Maximum temperature is 400 degrees F. That covers low pressure steam and condensate service as well as chilled and hot water, but check the steam number, not the CWP number, when you are sizing for steam.
5) Is the Nibco T-585-70-66 rated for natural gas or LP gas?
Yes, LP gas and natural gas are both named service applications for this bronze ball valve, along with compressed air. It conforms to MSS SP-110. Local gas code still governs what you may install, so confirm your jurisdiction accepts an MSS SP-110 bronze valve on the line you are piping.
6) What are the ball and stem made of on the Nibco T-585-70-66, and will it hold up in aggressive water?
Stainless steel ball and stainless steel stem, the -66 stainless trim package, with an RPTFE (reinforced PTFE) seat. The bronze body is dezincification resistant. That combination is what makes it suitable for aggressive water where a brass valve with a chrome plated ball would pit or the body would dezincify. The stem is also blowout-proof, so line pressure cannot drive it out if the packing nut is loosened.
7) Does the Nibco T-585 ball valve come with a handle, or do I order that separately?
The handle is included. It ships with a carbon steel standard lever handle, quarter turn, 90 degrees from full open to full closed. Nibco also offers the NIB-SEAL insulated handle as an option if you are running chilled water and want to keep the handle out of the insulation vapor barrier. Allow clearance for the lever to swing a full 90 degrees when you lay out the piping.
8) Can I use this bronze ball valve for throttling flow, or only for on/off?
On/off isolation only. A quarter turn ball valve with an RPTFE seat will cut the seat and wire draw if you park it partly open, and you lose the tight shutoff you bought it for. For balancing or throttling on a 2 inch line, use a globe valve or a circuit setter and leave the ball valve full open or full closed.
9) How do I order the Nibco T-585-70-66 and what does the model number mean?
Order it as Nibco T-585-70-66, manufacturer part NL951HD, in the 2 inch size. The T prefix is the threaded (female NPT) end connection, and the -66 suffix is the stainless steel trim package with stainless ball and stem. A solder-end version of the same series carries a different prefix, so make sure the T is on your order if you are threading into steel or brass nipples.
